Chapter 286
Chapter 286
Vera shot Jeffrey a look before saying. “Titus is totally crazy about Chiara, isn’t he?”
Wilbert paused for a moment, then nodded in agreement. “If one didn’t love her to one’s core, who would actually throw themselves in front of a bullet for someone?”
After saying that, Wilbert glanced at Jeffrey. They still had no idea about Ryan’s kidnapping, so they had no clue about Elaine’s involvement.
But Wilbert still got straight to the point.
“So, who actually pulled the trigger?” he asked.
Vera replied, “I checked with Queenie, and she told me it was Lena, the secretary Titus used to have. I’ve met her before, and you probably remember her, too.”
“Lena?” Wilbert was genuinely surprised. “Why would she try to shoot Chiara? Is there some kind of grudge between them?”
Vera raised an eyebrow, her eyes narrowing. “Is it because of some romantic drama?”
“Huh?” Wilbert blinked, not getting it.
“Give me a cigarette,” Jeffrey suddenly said.
Wilbert glanced at him and handed over a cigarette.
“A while back, Lena teamed up with Elaine and kidnapped Ryan,” Jeffrey said.
It was like a bolt from the blue. Wilbert and Vera exchanged a look, both stunned and caught off guard.
“When did that happen? How did we not hear about it?” Wilbert asked.
Jeffrey explained, “Elaine rigged a bomb and was taken out by the police right then and there. Lena got arrested, too. Today was her sentencing.
“After hearing the verdict, Lena totally lost it and grabbed a prison guard’s gun in front of everyone.”
It was just a simple sentence, but the content left both Wilbert and Vera completely stunned.
Wilbert was speechless for a long moment. “E… Elaine was killed by the police, but Lena was the one who fired the shot?”
“Yeah,” Jeffrey replied, exhaling a cloud of smoke in a low voice.
Wilbert felt like everything had happened way too fast. He glanced at Vera, who looked just as stunned, shaking her head in disbelief.
“Is Ryan okay?” Wilbert asked.
“He’s fine,” Jeffrey replied.
W”This is just… I mean… Wow…” Wilbert stammered, totally floored.
Jeffrey flicked his cigarette onto the stone steps and stubbed it out with his foot. “Let’s go.”
Wilbert came back to his senses, grabbed Vera’s hand, and headed down the steps with her.
Chiara woke up in the afternoon. She just lay there, staring at the ceiling in a daze, not moving a muscle.

Chapter 286
Heather walked in. She saw Chiara was awake and rushed straight to her side.
“Chiara, you’re awake,” Heather said, her voice full of concern.
Chiara turned her head to look at her. Her gaze softened, and her eyes suddenly grew red with emotion.
“Heather…” Chiara murmured, her voice trembling.
Heather squeezed her hand tightly. “I know, I heard everything. I believe he’ll be fine.”
Chiara slowly closed her eyes, her voice rough. “Maybe we should never have gotten involved at all.”
‘If we’d just been two parallel lines, never crossing, maybe none of this would’ve ever happened,’ thought Chiara.
Heather gently patted the back of her hand, comforting her. “But if that were the case, Ryan wouldn’t even exist, right?”
Chiara pressed her lips together, saying nothing. Ryan was the one thing she cherished most in her heart.
That was true. If she and Titus had never crossed paths, Ryan would never have come into her life.
Heather watched her for a long moment before finally speaking. “I used to blame Titus for not being able to protect you, and for what happened to Grandpa. But now…”
Chiara’s lashes trembled, and Heather gently stroked her hair.
“But he risked his life to protect you,” Heather added softly.
Chiara turned her head slightly, a tear slipping down her cheek.
“Ryan’s home by himself. Do you want to go back and check on him?” Heather asked gently.
Chiara perked up at the mention of Ryan. “Let’s go back. He gets scared when we’re not around.”
“Let’s go home, then,” Heather replied.
“Heather, I want to…” Chiara said, her voice soft and hesitant.
“I know, Chiara. He’s just upstairs. Come on, I’ll go with you,” Heather replied, her tone gentle.
Chiara nodded gently.
Adele saw Chiara had woken up and asked, “Feeling better now?”
Chiara lowered her gaze and shook her head. “I’m okay.”
After all, she wasn’t the one who was in trouble.
She walked over to the window and looked at Titus in the hospital room, her hands quietly curling into gentle fists.
Seeing this, Adele said, “Since you’re up now, you should head home. Ryan shouldn’t be left at home by himself.”
Chiara lowered her eyes and said softly, “I’ll go back now…”
Adele patted her shoulder, glanced at the hospital room, and let out a sigh.
“As soon as Titus wakes up, I’ll let you know right away. Go on, you’ve got Ryan to take care of. We’ve got things covered here,” Adele said gently.
Charlie nodded at Chiara as well.

Chapter 286
Even though Titus ended up like this to protect Chiara, none of them could fault her for it. It was Titus’s own decision, and blaming her wasn’t right.
After all, it was a debt owed, and debts always come due.
If Titus was lucky enough to wake up soon, maybe there was still hope for the two of them.
“Go on, go back home to take care of Ryan,” Adele said gently.
“What about Debby?” Chiara asked quietly.
Adele and Charlie shared a silent glance. Neither said a word for a moment.
They might’ve been able to keep Ryan’s situation under wraps, but what happened today? No way was staying a secret.
Chiara clenched her fists. “I’ll tell Debby myself.”
Adele just sighed. “That’s probably for the best.”
After leaving the hospital, Kason drove straight to the Lynch family home.
When the car stopped, Chiara didn’t even react. Heather nudged her gently on the shoulder.
“Hey, Chiara, we’re home now,” Heather said softly.
Chiara turned to look at the front door. “I’ll go and get Ryan.”
“You want to bring Ryan? What for?” Heather asked, a little puzzled.
“I’m heading to Goodman Manor,” Chiara replied. Her voice was rough as she turned to Heather. “I need to tell Debby myself…”
Thinking about Debby, Heather stayed quiet.
“Okay, I’ll go with you,” Heather said gently.
Chiara got out of the car, and Heather turned to Kason, who was still behind the wheel. “I need to go with her to Goodman Manor. Maybe you head back to the office?”
Kason glanced in the rearview mirror. “Nothing is going on at work today. I’ll tag along with you two.”

Heather didn’t refuse. Things between her and Kason had definitely gotten better lately. At least, they weren’t always at each other’s throats anymore.
Constantly butting heads was exhausting, and Heather definitely didn’t want to go back to that.
If just being a little more flexible could make things easier, it was totally worth it.
Chiara got in the car with Ryan in her arms. When Ryan saw Heather, he called out sweetly, “Auntie.”
But when he spotted Kason, he froze for a second, but still remembered his manners and called out, “Uncle.”
Kason raised an eyebrow, his long fingers tapping the steering wheel. He turned to check out Ryan, a spitting image of Titus, in the back seat, and couldn’t help but marvel.
‘Man, those Goodman genes are something else. I wondered if my future kids would end up looking like me,’ thought
Kason.
Thinking about that, Kason couldn’t help but glance at Heather.

Heather couldn’t quite figure out what that look meant.
“Ryan, he’s not your uncle, Heather said.
“Not my uncle? Then who is he?” Ryan asked innocently.
Heather paused, trying to figure out how to explain, but Kason spoke up before she could say anything.
“Hey, kid, I’m your uncle now. I’m your auntie’s husband. Come on, let’s hear you call me,” Kason said, grinning.
Heather just gave Kason a look, while Ryan glanced between the two of them, trying to figure out what was up.
Ryan was a smart little guy and could read the mood. Seeing that Heather didn’t say anything, he finally piped up, “Uncle
Kason.”
Kason raised an eyebrow, his tone deliberately vague as he tossed out, half-joking,
“Maybe having a little rascal of my own wouldn’t be so bad,” he quipped, a playful smirk on his face.
Heather didn’t bat an eye at his comment. She quietly fixed Ryan’s sleeve, ignoring Kason completely.
Kason caught her reaction in the rearview mirror, let it slide, and kept his eyes on the road.
Chiara kept to herself, and Heather respected her silence, not forcing any conversation.
When they arrived at the Goodman manor, Chiara walked in with Ryan in her arms and spotted Debby sitting on the couch.
Debby smiled when she saw them and waved them over.
“Come here, Chiara, Ryan. Come to me,” Debby called out warmly.
