Chapter 287
Chapter 287
Chiara wasn’t sure if Debby already knew about Titus getting shot.
“Debby, I need to talk to you about something…” Chiara said.
“I already know,” Debby replied.
Chiara paused, her eyes welled up with tears. “Debby, I…”
Debby just smiled, shook her head at Chiara. Instead, she turned her attention to Ryan, calling him over.
“Come here, Ryan, come to me,” Debby said warmly.
“Great-Grandma…” Ryan murmured.
Debby stroked Ryan’s head lovingly, then asked someone to carry him away before gesturing for Chiara to come closer.
“Come sit next to me,” Debby said gently.
Chiara sat down beside Debby and took her hands in hers.
Debby said, “Everyone walks their own path. We all have to live with the choices we made. He chose to protect you, so that’s his burden to bear. Whatever comes of it, he’ll have to face it himself.”
“Debby…” Chiara murmured.
Chiara’s eyes burned and filled with tears. The image of Titus stepping before her and taking that bullet kept looping in her head, like a broken record she couldn’t turn off.
Debby smiled softly and patted Chiara’s hand. “Titus did exactly what he should. If a man can’t protect the woman he loves, he’s not worth trusting with your heart.
“This was his decision, so you can’t blame anyone else. You shouldn’t let it weigh you down. He chose this himself. At least in that moment, he must’ve been grateful it was him and not you who got hurt.”
Silent tears streamed down Chiara’s face. Sitting before Debby, it felt like she could see right through her, leaving nowhere to hide.
“Debby, he’ll be alright, won’t he?” Chiara whispered, her voice shaky and full of hope.
Debby’s eyes brimmed with tears as she squeezed Chiara’s hand. After all, Titus was her flesh and blood. How could she not feel heartbroken?
“Of course, I truly believe he’ll be alright. He still has you and Ryan to live for. You have to trust that he’ll make it through,” Debby said, her voice gentle but full of conviction.
Heather had been waiting in the car for a long time. Just as she way wondering if she should go in, Kason, sitting behind the wheel, suddenly broke the silence.
“I really wonder what was going through his head at that moment,” Kason said.
Heather knew exactly who he meant.
“What makes someone use their own body to shield another from a bullet? If Titus never wakes up. Halinston is going to be in an uproar,” Kason added.
Noticing Heather’s silence, Kason glanced at the rearview mirror. “Why aren’t you saying anything?”

Heather shook her head at him in the mirror and steered the conversation elsewhere.
“Why isn’t she out yet?” Heather muttered.
“Relax. She just went in. Or are you worried Debby might do something to your sister?” Kason teased.
“I know she won’t,” Heather replied. She knew Debby loved Chiara.
“Then what are you worried about?” Kason asked.
Heather just shook her head. Soon, she saw Chiara coming out of the Goodman manor with Ryan in her arms.
Heather opened the car door, and Chiara got in, her eyes red from crying, still holding Ryan close.
“How’s Debby holding up?” Heather asked.
Chiara nodded gently. “She’s fine.”
She’d gone in to comfort Debby, but it turned out Debby was the one comforting her.
Chiara took a deep breath and hugged Ryan even tighter. She said softly, “Let’s go home.”
Heather watched her for a few seconds before turning to Kason. “Let’s go.”
Kason glanced at Chiara and Ryan in her arms, raising an eyebrow.
When they arrived at the Lynch residence, Heather was about to suggest moving back in for a few days to keep Chiara company, but before she could even say anything, she heard a distinct click.
Just as Heather expected, the car doors locked. She frowned and glanced over.
“What are you doing?” Heather demanded.
Kason turned around, one hand still on the wheel. He looked at her. “What are you trying to do?”
“I’m getting out,” Heather replied.
“Why are you getting out?” Kason asked.
Heather just stared at him, not saying a word.
After a few seconds of silence, she finally said, “I want to stay with her for a few days. I can’t leave her alone right now.”
“Seriously, what’s there to worry about? What’s Chiara’s ex-husband to you, anyway?” Kason said, a mocking half-smile tugging at his lips.
His teasing tone left Heather momentarily speechless.
Honestly, he wasn’t wrong. Titus was just Chiara’s ex-husband, nothing more.
“What, are you thinking of ditching your own husband for Chiari’s ex-husband?” Kason added, eyebrow raised.
Heather stared at him, not saying a word.
“Kason, are you crazy or something?” she finally snapped.
Chiara noticed Heather was still in the car. She handed Ryan over to Ana, shot a glance at the car that hadn’t left yet, and headed back over.

Chapter 287
She knocked lightly on the window, and the back window slowly rolled down.
She gave Kason a quick look, then turned to Heather. I’m okay. You don’t need to worry about me.”
Heather studied her for a few seconds before asking. “You sure you don’t want me to stick around for a few days?”
Chiara shook her head. “Really, you don’t have to.”
She shot another look at Kason, but kept quiet. Some things were better left unsaid when Kason was around.
However, as sisters, they understood each other better than anyone else.
So Chiara could see that Heather was actually doing better than she’d imagined.
Especially these days, Chiara hadn’t seen any more scandalous rumors about Kason in the tabloids.
Thanks,” Chiara said to Kason, since he’d driven her around a few times lately.
Kason raised an eyebrow, gave a low, teasing chuckle, and said, “No need to be so formal, Chiara
Heather shot Kason a glare, but Chiara didn’t say anything else.
“I’m going inside. I’ll have to head back to the hospital later,” Chiara said.
Heather remembered that Charlie and Adele were still at the hospital and nodded.
“Alright, just call me if you need anything.” Heather said.
“Okay,” Chiara replied, giving a small wave before turning and walking through the front door.
Chiara filled Ana and Lindsay in on everything that had happened today.
Both of them gasped, hands flying to their mouths, worry written all over their faces.
“How’s Mr. Goodman doing now? Is he out of danger?” Ana asked, her voice trembling.
Chiara nodded. “Yeah.”
“That’s good, that’s good…” Ana murmured, trying to sound relieved.
“But the doctors can’t say when he’ll wake up. It might be soon, or it could take a long time… Chiara said, worry etched in her voice.
That wasn’t exactly reassuring. Ana and Lindsay exchanged anxious glances and went quiet.
If he never wakes up… what then?’ Isn’t that being a vegetable? Ana thought, her heart sinking,
Chiara glanced at them and said softly, “Could you cook a bit more tonight? I need to bring some food over to the hospital Charlie and Adele are still there, keeping watch.
Ana and Lindsay nodded. “Of course.”
Mrs. Walker hesitated, then asked, “Chiara, is everything okay with Debby Goodman?”
‘She already knows, and she’s handling it with remarkable composure. We should follow her lead and keep calm too.’ Chiara replied.
Ana and Lindsay looked surprised for a moment, then nodded.
Chapter 287
“Debby’s right. We need to stay calm. Maybe things aren’t as bad as we think. Titus will wake up soon, and we need to hold it together,” Ana said gently, trying to reassure everyone.
Chiara gave a small nod and headed upstairs.
She needed to keep herself together, to stay steady.
Even if Titus never woke up, life would have to go on.
Everyone had their own responsibilities.
As Ana and Lindsay watched Chiara head upstairs, Lindsay couldn’t help but mutter, “Lena is crazy. She’ll do anything. This time, she deserves the death penalty.”
“She’s finished for sure…” Ana agreed.
Hearing that, Chiara paused for a moment on the stairs.
Once she was back in her room, Chiara finally broke down, her back sliding against the door as she sank helplessly to the floor.
She buried her face in her hands, unable to hold back her emotions any longer
That final look Titus had given her kept replaying in her mind, his eyes and expression haunting her.
There was something like relief in his gaze, but also a deep, aching guilt. His eyes were so intense and unfathomable that Chiara had no idea what he was thinking at that moment as he looked at her.
‘I can still feel how Titus’s hand shook ever so slightly as he covered my eyes, Chiara thought, unable to forget that moment.
