Chapter 288
Chapter 288
Chiara just wanted them to go their separate ways and find peace in their own lives.
She never hated Titus. What she felt was more like lingering resentment.
He didn’t love her when they first got married, but she was the one who approached him, with two things in mind.
One was for herself, and the other was for the Lynch family.
So even after they got married, when he still didn’t love her or care about her, she just felt a bit resentful inside. That’s all.
Anyway, she chose the path. Even though their marriage was doomed from the start and ended in a breakup, she knew she had her share of responsibility for how things turned out.
As the saying goes, it takes two to tango. She’d always understood that.
But even in the end, when he broke his word and chose Elaine, which led to everything falling apart, Chiara only resented him. The one she hated was herself.
She reflected, ‘If I hadn’t lost my determination to make our marriage work, maybe none of this would’ve happened at all.
Both times, it was Chiara who made the call.
Chiara wiped away her tears, thinking to herself, ‘I don’t want anything to happen to Titus.’
Deep down, all Chiara wished for was for both of them to be alright. That was her honest feeling.
Even when Chiara decided to get a divorce and take Ryan with her out of Halinston, she never wanted things to go badly for him.
Chiara never thought she’d be the reason he turned out like this.
Thank goodness, the surgery went well. Chiara didn’t even dare to think about what would’ve happened if Titus’s operation had failed.
She knew she’d carry guilt and unease for the rest of her life, and she’d probably never be able to forget him.
Chiara slowly pushed herself up and headed to the bathroom, splashing some water on her face.
When she came downstairs, she put on a calm front, but Ana and Lindsay kept stealing glances at her.
“Are you full, Ryan?” Chiara asked.
“Yeah, I’m full. But why didn’t Dad eat with us tonight?” Ryan wondered.
Chiara froze momentarily, then reached out to gently stroke Ryan’s hair before replying softly, “He’s on a business trip. He’s got some work to do and won’t be back for a few days.”
“Okay… Can I go over to Dad’s place and play?” Ryan asked.
“Of course, you can. After dinner, Mrs. Walker and Lindsay will take you over to next door, alright?” Chiara said gently.
“Great,” Ryan replied, his face lighting up.
“Mrs. Walker, Lindsay, Ryan’s in your hands,” Chiara said.
“Don’t worry. We’ll take good care of him,” Ana assured her.

Chiara nodded, grabbed the thermal lunchbox, and left.
As Chiara walked away, Ana and Lindsay both let out a sigh. “Heavens, please let Titus wake up safe and sound, Ana murmured, worry etched on her face.
Lindsay also put her hands together and whispered a prayer. “Mr. Goodman will be alright, I just know it.”
Ana glanced at Lindsay, her expression anxious. “Let’s hope so.”
At the hospital, Chiara saw Titus’s parents sitting quietly on the chairs outside the ward, keeping a silent vigil.
She couldn’t help but grip the handle of the lunchbox tighter. In that moment, she realized they were simply parents, vulnerable and anxious for their child.
“Adele, Charlie…” Chiara called out softly.
Adele and Charlie both turned at the sound of her voice.
“You’re here. Where’s Ryan?” Adele asked.
“Mrs. Walker and Lindsay are taking care of him. I brought you both some dinner,” Chiara said.
Truth is, neither of them felt like eating, and Chiara herself hadn’t had much either.
But she still made herself eat a little.
“I know you don’t have an appetite right now, but you still need to eat something,” Chiara said gently.
Adele gave Chiara a small nod. “Alright, we’ll try to eat a little.”
Just then, Yves came over, bringing them some dinner, worried that Adele and Charlie might not have had anything to eat.
Yves greeted them, “Aunt Adele, Uncle Charlie, Chiara…”
Chiara nodded at him.
Yves had been busy all afternoon and only now had a chance to come by and check on them.
Yves said, “I was worried you hadn’t had anything to eat, so I grabbed some dinner for you guys. But since Chiara already brought you something, I’ll take mine back.
“Food at the hospital can’t compare to a home-cooked meal anyway. Enjoy your meal. I’m going in to see Titus.”
Chiara finally looked up at Yves after hearing him speak. “Can I go in with you?”
Yves was taken aback for a second, but then nodded. “Yeah, you can, but you’ll need to put on a sterile gown first.”
“Okay,” Chiara replied.
Chiara slipped into a sterile gown and followed Yves into the hospital room. She stood quietly by the bedside, looking at Titus as he slept.
Even like this, one could still see how good-looking he was.
Yves finished jotting down the numbers, then turned to glance at Chiara before speaking.
“Chiara, Titus’s vitals are stable for now,” Yves said.
Chiara nodded softly, her eyes never leaving Titus as he lay there.

Chapter 288
Seeing this, Yves quietly stepped back a few paces, giving her some space.
Chiara stared at the unconscious Titus lying in the hospital bed, and suddenly remembered the very first time she ever met him.
It was back in her first year of middle school. Someone stole her wallet, and she instinctively chased after the thief.
That was when Titus suddenly showed up and stuck out his leg, sending the thief sprawling.
The thief saw that Titus was just some high school kid in a uniform, so he tried to act tough and pick a fight.
But Titus had been learning self-defense since he was a kid, so dealing with a thief like that was a walk in the park for him.
With just a couple of quick moves, he had the guy down and made him give back the wallet.
Realizing he was outmatched, the thief muttered an apology and took off, tail between his legs.
Chiara was in seventh grade and hadn’t started to grow up. She was a late bloomer.
At that time, she looked more like a little kid than a middle schooler.
Titus picked up the wallet and strolled over to her, raising an eyebrow.
“Is this your wallet, little one?” he asked.
Chiara was a mess. After chasing the thief for two whole blocks, sweat was pouring down her face, and her bangs were all over the place, making her look silly.
But all Chiara could think was, ‘Wow, this guy is amazing. He handled the thief like it was nothing and got my wallet back.”
She was so stunned by how handsome he was, she couldn’t look away for a second.
Titus saw she wasn’t saying anything and figured she was probably still shaken up, so he didn’t waste any words on her. He went ahead and opened her wallet.
Inside, there was a wad of cash and several bank cards. Anyone could tell she was a rich kid. No wonder the thief went after her.
Titus was about to look for a student ID inside, but then figured Chiara was probably a little kid, maybe even still in primary school.
So he showed a rare bit of patience. It was not that he was born that way, but because he’d been taught to always finish what he started. He couldn’t help her out and then left her hanging.
He stuffed the wallet straight into her backpack.
“Little one, don’t carry so much cash around with you next time. It’s dangerous. Head home, okay?” he said.
With that, he turned and walked away. Somewhere in the distance, someone was calling his name.
Chiara didn’t catch what they were saying, but she stood there, dazed, for ages. It wasn’t until she got home and saw herself in the mirror that she completely freaked out.
‘I look like a total disaster!’ she thought, mortified.
That one unforgettable glance stuck with Chiara for a long time. It wasn’t until a school celebration in seventh grade that she randomly saw a photo of Titus and realized he’d gone to the same school as her.
He was kind of a legend at that school, and that’s when she found out he was the Goodman family’s one and only son.

Chapter 288
The real deal, the kind of guy everyone envied.
After that, Chiara always found herself paying attention to him. Before she knew it, the name Titus Goodman was etched into her heart.
It wasn’t until Chiara finally grew up a bit that she realized what she’d felt back then was a crush, maybe even love at first sight.
Chiara liked him so much that she was always curious about what he was doing, always eager to hear any news about him.
Just one glance, and it feels like a lifetime. Maybe that’s what people mean when they talk about love at first sight, Chiara thought to herself.
Even though they both lived in the same city, their worlds never collided. Their parents kept them under wraps, so they were basically invisible outside.
Their folks never let them show up at any public gatherings or events.
Everything changed on that rainy night when she secretly followed him to the hotel.
