Chapter 289
Chapter 289
Chiara couldn’t help but hope. She wanted to ask if Titus remembered her, the girl whose wallet got stolen, the one he’d helped back then.
But Titus didn’t remember. She could tell from the way he looked at her that he didn’t recognize her.
Was Chiara disappointed? Maybe a little, but she didn’t blame him. After all, she’d changed so much since then.
Her parents were worried that Chiara and her sister might start dating too early, so before college, they didn’t let them dress up.
They kept things low-key at school, and almost nobody knew they were the Lynch heiresses.
Everyone in Halinston knew the Lynch family had two heiresses, but they also knew Mr. and Mrs. Lynch shielded their daughters from the public eye.
So it made sense that Titus didn’t recognize her after all these years. Looking back, Chiara figured she’d been so plain that it was only natural for people to forget her.
Still, Chiara gathered her courage and reached out to him, hoping he would help her and the Lynch family.
Chiara thought to herself, ‘If he’s still the same guy who helped me back then, maybe he’ll help me again!
Just as she’d hoped, he actually agreed to marry her and promised to help Lynch Group through its current crisis.
She was genuinely stunned and thrilled back then.
‘Maybe he does have some feelings for me, Chiara thought to herself. ‘Otherwise, why would he agree to marry me without a second thought?’
Chiara’s heart brimmed with hope and excitement for the life they were about to start together.
But reality was nothing as she’d hoped. Titus was always caught up at work. When it came to her, he was distant. Sometimes even downright cold.
Even on the day they registered their marriage, he dropped everything and left her alone just because of a phone call. Back then, Chiara thought he must’ve had something important to deal with! She never felt angry or resentful. If anything, she just kept worrying about whether he was okay.
After half a month apart, Titus finally came back. They hadn’t been intimate since that night at the hotel.
So the moment Titus walked through the door, he pulled her straight into bed. Truth be told, she was more than happy about it.
She thought he missed her just as much as she missed him.
Once it was over, Titus headed to the shower, and his phone lit up with a call from someone saved as ‘Elaine’
Chiara just knew it was a woman calling. Her instincts screamed at her that this might be the very call that had made Titus leave her on their marriage registration day.
Almost as if something possessed her, Chiara answered the call before she even realized what she was doing. “Hello?” Chiara answered, her voice soft and a little husky. Maybe it was the aftermath of what they’d just done. There was a pause on the other end before the woman finally spoke. “So you’re the trophy wife Titus married?”

Chapter 289
“Trophy wife?’ The words echoed in Chiara’s mind, leaving her momentarily speechless.
Chiara froze at the label. ‘Is that really all I am to him?’ she wondered.
“Who are you?” Chiara asked.
“I’m Elaine. Ms. Lynch, you should know who I am. After all, Titus was with me on your wedding night. I’m sure you remember that,” Elaine said, her voice laced with mockery.
Chiara’s heart clenched painfully at those words.
‘So that’s why Titus rushed off that night. He went to be with another woman?’ Chiara thought, her mind reeling.
Chiara clutched her phone, her voice shaky as she demanded, “What exactly are you to him?”
“Ms. Lynch, come on, we’re all grown-ups. What do you think is going on between Titus and me?” Elaine shot back, her words laced with mockery.
Upon hearing Elaine, Chiara was at a loss for words. She wasn’t naive, and that made it hurt even more.
Chiara’d never once considered that her brand-new husband might have another woman on the side.
When Titus stepped out and saw her answering his phone, his relaxed look vanished, replaced by a chilling glare.
“Hang up,” Titus said, his voice flat and commanding.
Chiara jumped at his sudden words, hung up without thinking, then stared at him in shock.
Titus walked over, picked up his phone, and glanced at the call log. He knew they’d talked, but it was obvious he didn’t care. He wasn’t about to explain himself.
He lifted her chin, his voice icy as he warned, “I don’t like people touching my personal things. Not even you, Mrs. Goodman. I don’t want to see it happen again.”
Her expression must have been terrible right then, but she didn’t say a word.
Titus didn’t seem to expect her to say anything either.
She watched him get dressed to leave, but she couldn’t help but ask, “Where are you going?”
Titus turned back to glance at her, raising an eyebrow with a faint, amused smile.
“What, trying to control me already because we’re married?” he teased.
Chiara’s face fell, a wave of helplessness washing over her. She could only shake her head, murmuring a soft denial, “No, I just…”
“Afraid I’m off to see another woman?” Titus shot back, his tone mocking and a little cruel.
Chiara was stunned, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at hini, unable to respond.
Titus looked at her, his face emotionless and unfeeling.
“If I am, you can’t do anything about it, Chiara. I thought you understood why I married you,” he said, his voice flat and cold.
Elaine’s mocking words, ‘So you’re just the trophy wife Titus brought home?’ echoed in her ears again.
She wasn’t naive. She knew exactly what Titus meant.

Chapter 289
He hadn’t married her out of love. It was all about mutual benefit.
After that, Chiara wasn’t happy anymore, but she still did her best to fulfill her duties as a wife.
Even if Titus didn’t care for Chiara and thought she was suitable for the role of Mrs. Goodman, her feelings for him were genuine.
Chiara had loved him for ten years. How could that possibly be fake?
Even when she felt hurt and lonely, she never let go of that tiny hope in her heart.
Chiara believed that, given enough time, maybe Titus’d warm up to her. Maybe, one day, he’d actually fall for her, too.
But after a few years of marriage, all those hopes she’d held onto turned out to be nothing but wishful thinking.
Titus never fell for her, and she eventually learned he had someone special in his life, a confidante named Elaine.
Chiara often found herself scrolling through Elaine’s social media, watching as she shared bits of her everyday life.
She didn’t know if Elaine realized she was lurking on her profile, but Chiara could always catch glimpses of Titus in the background of Elaine’s posts.
As the days passed, Chiara’s heart kept getting colder.
It wasn’t until the day she finally met Elaine in person that she truly saw things for what they were.
That was when she realized, ‘If someone doesn’t love me, it doesn’t matter what.I do. No matter how careful I am, how humble I am, or how hard I try to win him over, it will never be enough.
‘If he doesn’t love me, I don’t want to keep holding on anymore.
‘Trying to warm up his frozen heart has only left me numb. It is time to finally let go.
Over those years, Chiara often tested the waters. Sometimes deliberately, and sometimes without even realizing it. It was just to see if he cared at all.
But Titus always shut her down with a single, blunt answer.
He once told her, “Love? How much is that even worth?”
‘Yeah, how much is love worth? It’s not worth a damn thing,” Chiara thought, a bitter smile tugging at her lips.
Looking back, everything that happened after that felt like it was just yesterday.
But the truth was, they’d slept together and been tangled up for years.
Now, they had a child and were even thinking about having another,
Chiara wondered, ‘Why can’t we just let go and move on? Why do we keep getting tangled up in each other?
‘Would things finally be over if one of us just disappeared?’
But whenever she pictured Titus, lying in that hospital bed, gone from her and Ryan’s lives forever, her heart felt utterly
barren inside.
An endless sense of emptiness surrounded her.
It was a kind of pain she couldn’t describe.
Chapter 289
All she knew was that it hurt.
Chiara rolled over in bed, pressing her hand to the spot over her heart.
It wasn’t pain. It was more like an invisible hand gripping her heart, leaving her breathless.
Would it hurt if a bullet skimmed past one’s heart? Does losing too much blood really hurt?’ Chiara wondered, her mind drifting in the darkness.
