Chapter 292
Chapter 292
Seeing this, Chiara stepped back into the room and quietly watched as Adele gently covered Charlie with a blanket.
Adele stood quietly by the sofa, watching.
After a while, Adele slowly reached out and gently stroked Charlie’s gaunt face.
After about a minute, she withdrew her hand and turned to look at Chiara.
Chiara was taken aback, but then saw Adele smiling and beckoning her over.
Adele said, “Come.”
Chiara took one last look at Titus, peacefully asleep, then quietly closed the door.
Adele took her hand and led her out to the conservatory in the garden.
Chiara noticed and, without hesitation, handed the vase over.
Adele smiled. “Later, put these flowers in Titus’s room, so he can breathe in their fragrance.”
“Alright,” Chiara answered quietly.
“Has Debby ever told you about me?” Adele asked.
Chiara nodded. “A little bit.”
Adele smiled gently. “I first met him when I was a sophomore in college. It was love at first sight. Did you ever see what Charlie looked like when he was young?”
Chiara nodded. “I saw some pictures online.”
“They really do look alike, don’t they?’ Adele mused to herself.
Chiara nodded softly. “Mm-hmm.”
Adele snipped a few different flowers and placed them in the vase, then began to speak slowly, “You probably know almost everything now, right?”
Chiara paused for a moment, then nodded softly. “Yeah.”
Adele turned to her with a gentle smile. “So why haven’t you asked me why I was still willing to marry him?”
Chiara’s eyes flashed. She was curious about the reason.
“Can I ask?” Chiara said.
“Of course,” Adele replied.
“So why did you choose to marry Charlie?” Chiara asked.
‘And what made you stay with him all these years?’ she wondered to herself.
Adele smiled. “Because he wouldn’t give up on me.”
Chiara blinked. “What?”

Chapter 292
“He wouldn’t let me walk away, just like Titus,” Adele said softly.
As she spoke, Adele picked up a lily that hadn’t bloomed yet and placed it in the vase.
“I could never win against him. Honestly, I didn’t even want to fight anymore. When he lost it, he’d go so far as to try and keep me locked up. I was exhausted, sick of it all.
Adele said, “And I knew I’d never fall for anyone else after separating from him, so why not stick it out?
“Besides, I’d already been carrying Charlie’s baby by then. Since he wouldn’t let me go, I just stayed.
“Because I was pregnant, Marcus finally caved after Debby talked him into it. He agreed to let us get married. But our married life wasn’t happy. It was plain dull.
“I’m the type to hold a grudge. I could never forget how he hurt me. So, after we got married, my attitude toward him became increasingly indifferent.
“But he acted like he didn’t even notice, always putting on a smile for me, acting like nothing was wrong…”
Adele let out a soft laugh and shook her head, adding, “Back when we were dating, he barely ever smiled like that.
“I figured, if he wanted to get married, fine, let’s do it. I was sure if anyone was gonna call it quits, it’d be him, not me.”
Chiara smirked. “So, have you been waiting all this time for Charlie to be the one to ask for a divorce?”
“Well, sort of,” Adele replied.
“And what about now? Are you still waiting for him?” Chiara asked.
Adele was quiet for a long moment before shaking her head. “I know that’s never going to happen. I thought I understood him, but turns out I didn’t know him as well as I believed.
“Honestly, I’m surprised he’s managed to put up with me and keep trying to make things work all these years.”
“That just means Charlie loves you. He’s been the same, day in and day out, for years,” Chiara said.
‘If it wasn’t love that went all the way to his core, how could anyone stay so devoted for ten, twenty, even thirty years?’ Chiara thought to herself.
“Maybe,” Adele replied.
Chiara gently rearranged the loose stems in the vase and asked softly, “So, have you forgiven him?”
Adele set down the scissors and turned to look at her. “No.”
Chiara looked at her quietly. “Why?”
“Some answers take a whole lifetime to figure out. I guess I’ll keep searching for this one for years to come. Maybe not until the day I leave this world will I finally find it,” Adele said.
Chiara set the vase down on the nightstand, then glanced over at Titus, who was sleeping in bed.
She could still hear Adele’s words echoing in her mind.
Adele had said, “If he’s the only one for me in this life, and there’ll never be anyone else, maybe I should see this through to the end. Time always has a way of giving us the answers, doesn’t it?”
Chiara wondered, ‘But what about Titus and me? When he faced life and death, did he finally find the answer he’d been searching for?’
Chapter 292
Chiara leaned down and gently touched Titus’s check. He was so thin that his cheekbones stood out, but even with his gaunt face, he was still handsome.
“Mom!”
Chiara turned around. “Ryan…
Ryan dashed into the room, leaned over the bed, and stared at Titus. Every day, he’d ask the same question.
“Is Dad going to wake up today?” Ryan asked.
“Not today,” Chiara replied softly.
“Then, when will Dad wake up?” Ryan asked quietly.
Chiara gently placed Ryan’s hand in Titus’s palm and said softly, “He’ll wake up one day.”
Jeffrey, Wilbert, and Vera stopped by now and then to see how Titus was doing.
They’d chat in the room, sometimes bringing up old memories.
The doctors said the best thing was for the family to be around and talk to him as much as possible.
So everyone would come by every few days.
Heather and Kason had dropped by a few times, too.
One day, when Jeffrey dropped by, Chiara was helping Titus clean up. His back injury had long since healed.
“Let me help you,” Jeffrey offered.
Chiara glanced over at him. “Oh, you’re here.”
Jeffrey came in carrying some toys. “Yeah, brought a few things for Ryan. Let me give you a hand.”
“Alright, thanks…” Chiara said.
Chiara wanted some help, but Charlie was out, and Adele had taken Debby to the hospital for a check-up.
Jeffrey glanced at Titus, who was still out cold, and gently rolled him onto his side.
He watched quietly as Chiara wiped Titus down. Then, he finally spoke up. “So, what are you planning to do?”
Chiara paused, looking up at him. “Plans for what?”
“Are you planning to stay here and keep looking after him?” Jeffrey asked.
Chiara didn’t answer. Jeffrey studied her for a moment before saying, “What if he never wakes up?”
Chiara hesitated, still saying nothing.
Jeffrey suddenly stepped closer, gently took her wrist, and spoke lightly. “Even if you’re not here every minute, there’ll always be someone to look after him. You don’t need to worry about that.”
‘Yeah, of course, there’s nothing to worry about, Chiara told herself.
Chiara shifted her wrist, trying to pull away. “Let go of me.”
Jeffrey glanced at Titus on the bed. “It’s been three months. If he was ever going to wake up. he’d have woken up already.”

Chapter 292
Chiara knew that all too well. Honestly, everyone was starting to accept reality, even if it hurt.
Chiara drew in a long breath, shutting her eyes for a moment. “Jeffrey, let go of me.”
Jeffrey stared at her for a long moment, then suddenly said, his voice low, “Chiara, I like…”
“Mr. Yates,” Chiara snapped, cutting him off with a cold, warning tone.
“You two are friends, and I’m his ex-wife. Ryan is caught in the middle. So think it through before you say anything, Chiara said sharply.
Jeffrey stared at her for a moment before slowly letting go of her wrist, but he still couldn’t hold back what he wanted to say.
Jeffrey said, “Honestly, I don’t even know when it happened. I find myself always watching you. When I realized I was getting too close, I tried to pull away.
“However, when you left Halinston and went missing, it wasn’t just Titus who was searching for you. I was looking for you, too…”
Chiara had heard enough and cut him off, not wanting to listen to another word.
“That’s enough. Just leave. Debby and Adele will be back any minute,” Chiara snapped, her tone icy and unyielding.
