Chapter 296
Chapter 296
Eric saw what happened, but didn’t think much of it.
He took Nancy’s hand from Eunice, glanced at Eunice, and asked, knowing full well the answer, “What’s wrong?”
Nancy shook her head. “Nope, I’m fine.”
Eric mumbled something and pulled her close, keeping her by his side.
Eunice was at a loss for words, feeling exasperated, but she couldn’t say anything about it.
In the end, she just gave Eric an annoyed glare.
Chiara saw Eunice come back, cheeks puffed out in anger.
“What’s up?” she asked.
“Such a faker!” Eunice muttered.
Chiara knew exactly who she meant, so she stayed out of it.
After sitting down, Eunice watched Nancy stick close to Eric. She shook her head, sighing. “Nancy is just way too naive…”
Chiara shot her a look and nodded in agreement.
“Being naive isn’t always a bad thing,” Chiara said.
“Yeah, true enough…” Eunice agreed.
All the gifts from the baby’s one-month-old party were donated to charity by Helen, in the baby’s name.
Chiara was one of the last to leave.
She checked the time, then walked over to the family to say her goodbyes before heading out.
“Mr. and Mrs. Murphy, Eric, Nancy, I’m heading out now. Congratulations again,” Chiara said.
“Already leaving, Chiara?” Helen asked.
Eric nodded at her. “Drive safe.”
“Alright, see you,” Chiara said.
“I’ll walk you out,” Eunice said, linking arms with her as they headed out.
“Why are you heading back so early?” Eunice asked.
Chiara gave a helpless smile. “I’ve been out all day, so I should probably head home.”
“Are you worried about Titus?” Eunice asked.
Chiara stayed quiet. Her silence said it all.
“Seriously, what’s there to worry about? If he were awake, he would’ve called you already. Plus, he’s in his own place. Nothing
to stress over,” Eunice said.
Chiara didn’t answer. She squeezed Eunice’s hand and said, “Seriously, you don’t need to walk me out. I’m leaving.”

“Okay, drive safe,” Eunice replied.
Chiara nodded. “Yeah, I know. Go on, get inside.”
“Bye,” Eunice called out.
Chiara waved goodbye and hopped into her car.
It was rush hour, and traffic was a nightmare. By the time Chiara was driving home, night had fallen.
But when she got home, she didn’t see them around.
“Where’s Ryan?” Chiara asked.
The maid, who was cleaning, glanced up and said, “Mrs. Goodman took him out to play. She said they’d be back soon.”
“Was she alone?” Chiara asked.
“No. Mr. Goodman went with her,” the maid replied.
As long as Adele wasn’t taking Ryan out by herself, Chiara felt reassured.
Chiara had planned to go upstairs, change her clothes, and take off her makeup before coming back down.
But after glancing at the door, she decided to check the room before heading upstairs.
She gently pushed the door open. It was too dark to see, so she turned on the light.
She thought she’d find Titus still unconscious on the bed, but when the light came on, the bed was empty.
Chiara just stood there, staring blankly at the empty bed for a long moment.
‘Wait, where did he go?’ Chiara thought, a wave of confusion hitting her.
Just as Chiara was about to ask the maid, a hand suddenly grabbed her wrist. The touch was cold as ice, but all too real.
The cry that was about to escape her lips got caught in her throat.
She froze in the doorway, her heart pounding so wildly that it felt like it might jump right out of her chest, but she didn’t dare turn around.
She was terrified that all of this was just a figment of her imagination.
But she hadn’t had a drop to drink today, so where would a hallucination even come from?
The door clicked shut behind her, and before she knew it, she was enveloped in someone’s arms.
Chiara’s expression shifted instantly. She glanced down at the arm circling her waist, heart pounding,
They were those familiar veins and lines. She knew this arm better than anyone. She’d massaged it every single day.
She wanted to say something, but the words got stuck in her throat, as her voice had disappeared.
Her whole body tensed up, frozen in place, not daring to move an inch.
Suddenly, Titus’s husky, low voice murmured right next to her ear.
“Where have you been?” he said.

As soon as Chiara heard that voice she’d been missing for so long, her eyes instantly welled up.
She didn’t know how long she stood there in silence until he finally spoke again.
“I asked you. Where did you go? Why are you just getting back, huh?” Titus’s voice was low and rough.
That was when reality finally sank in for Chiara. She tried to turn around, but Titus pressed her against the door, keeping her in place.
Titus intertwined his fingers with hers, his ring brushing against her skin as he held her hand firmly against the door.
“Still not answering?” Titus said, his voice deep and insistent.
Chiara finally closed her eyes, swallowed hard, and managed to speak softly, “It was Eric and Nancy’s one-month-old baby’s party today. I went to celebrate with them
“One-month-old party…” Titus echoed, his voice low and thoughtful.
“Yeah…” Chiara tried to wiggle her fingers free, wanting to turn and look at him, but Titus gripped her hand even tighter.
He was so thin now that his bony fingers dug into hers, making her wince from the pressure.
Chiara stayed quiet for a long moment, slowly calming her racing heart.
“Can you let go of me for a second? I just want to see you,” she finally said.
Titus paused, then slowly released her. The moment Chiara turned around, the lights suddenly flicked off.
“You…” Chiara started to say, but before she could finish, Titus sealed her lips with his.
Chiara hesitated for a moment, but didn’t resist. Titus started with a gentle, testing kiss, then pulled her into a deeper, more passionate one.
Before she realized it, Chiara found herself lying on the bed, breathless and trembling. Her heart was thumping so hard that it felt like it might burst out of her chest.
Her eyes were hazy, but with the moonlight slipping in through the window, she could still make out his figure hovering over her.
Just then, she heard Titus’s rough, low voice right by her ear.
“Can I?” he murmured.
Chiara knew exactly what he meant, but not now. She couldn’t let it happen, not yet.
She was just about to shake her head, but before she could, Titus kissed her again, stopping her from refusing.
Chiara tried to push him away, but as soon as her hand touched his thin, bony body, she couldn’t bring herself to use any strength.
Titus was so skinny. He was all bone under her touch.
Her vision blurred, her heart twisting with longing and worry. She lifted her chin, trying to remind him gently.
“You just woke up. You can’t do anything too intense…” she whispered.
Titus didn’t stop. He kissed her everywhere, not missing a spot.
“Don’t worry. I was just knocked out for a bit, not broken. I can handle this,” he murmured, his voice rough and determined.

“But…” Chiara started.
“Chiara, I’ve missed you so much,” Titus said, his voice low and aching.
Chiara’s fingers clenched tight in her palm as his kisses washed over her, and she listened to his deep, husky voice.
Titus murmured, “I had this dream that felt like it lasted forever. You were gone, and I kept searching for you, looking everywhere…
“In that dream, I wandered through deserts, traveled across grasslands, and even climbed mountains covered in snow, but I couldn’t find you…”
Finally, Titus leaned over her, his voice low and rough as he said, “I thought I’d never find you…”
Chiara suddenly gripped his pajamas tightly, biting her lip to keep herself from crying out.
After that, Titus kept mumbling all sorts of things, his voice hoarse and broken, words tumbling out in fits and starts. Most of it was lost in the haze.
By then, Chiara couldn’t hold onto any of his words. They all blurred together in her mind.
After everything, he just pulled her into his arms and wouldn’t let go.
She stared dazedly at the hospital machines in front of her. She felt the heat of his body pressed against her back. Only then did it finally sink in: this was real, not some dream.
He was awake at last, out of nowhere, with no warning at all…
Maybe it was because he’d been in a coma for so long, Titus’s body was still fragile.
They were both soaked, their skin slick with sweat.
Chiara listened to the sound of his heartbeat behind her, and only then did she know for sure. None of this was a dream. Everything had really happened.
That’s when she finally spoke, “So, when did you wake up?”
