Chapter 309
Chapter 309
Kason and Heather had been coming and going as a pair at the company. They arrived together and left together, always side by side.
Everyone in the company was buzzing, wondering if they had gained true love after a false marriage.
Plus, these days, Kason was heading straight home after work, and even the gossip columns barely mentioned him anymore.
If he was ever spotted with another woman, there was always a crowd around, never just the two of them.
It was all just playing along for appearances.
One day, Kason pulled up to their home. Before Heather could get out, he held her shoulder and kissed her.
Heather froze for a second, then slowly closed her eyes, not refusing him.
Seeing her respond like that, Kason chuckled softly. “I won’t go in with you tonight.”
Heather opened her eyes and blurted out, “Where are you going?”
Kason gently pinched her earlobe and said softly, “I’ve got a flight back to Mieashy tonight. Something’s come up over there, so I need to head back.”
Heather looked at him for a few seconds, then nodded. “Alright, got it.”
She reached for the door handle, but Kason grabbed her wrist.
Heather had no choice but to turn back to him.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
“That’s it? Nothing else to say?” Kason asked.
Their eyes met, and Heather couldn’t help but ask, “When will you be back?”
Kason gave a low chuckle. “Three days if all goes well, a week if not.”
“Got it.”
Kason knew her well enough not to expect any sweet talk.
“If you miss me, give me a call,” he said.
Heather shot him a playful smile and asked, “Is it really okay if I call you?”
Kason’s brows lifted, a little surprised she’d tease him like that.
“Why not?” he replied.
They both knew what she was getting at, even if she didn’t say it out loud.
Kason gently brushed her cheek and murmured, “Anytime,”
A subtle, almost awkward look crossed Heather’s face when she heard him say that.
‘As if I actually care, she thought, a little amused.

Chapter 309
“Well, I’m heading in,” she said, clearing her throat.
Kason glanced at the time and didn’t stop her. He watched her get out and walk inside before finally driving away.
When Heather got home, Greta saw her come in alone and asked, “Hello, Heather. Where is Mr. Bradford?”
“He dropped me off at the door. He’s flying to Mieashy tonight,” Heather replied.
Greta nodded. “I see. How long will he be gone?”
“About a week,” Heather said.
“Well, guess he’s missing the delicious food tonight. Go wash your hands, dinner’s ready,” Greta said.
Heather gave a small smile. “Sure.”
Greta was a bit of an enigma, but Heather had never pried.
After nearly a year, Heather had already picked up on the fact that Greta and Kason had something going on, which was definitely more than just an employment relationship.
But tonight, for the first time ever, Heather finally brought it up.
Greta gave her a warm smile and said, “Honestly, I always thought you didn’t care or wonder about these things.”
Heather hesitated. “Just asking casually.”
“I think of him as if he’s my own son,” Greta said.
That caught Heather off guard, and she looked up at Greta.
Greta pulled out a chair and sat down. She continued, “The first time I met him, he was just ten years old, living in an orphanage in Mieashy. Because he looked different from the other kids, he was always getting bullied. Sometimes, he went hungry. I was working there back then, so I looked after him.
“He’s a bright kid, always did well in school, but life wasn’t easy for him. He never told me much, but I know how hard it was for him, making it alone on Vista Street. And I’m aware of all the history and tension between you two.”
Heather pressed her lips together and slowly set down her fork.
Greta gave her a gentle smile and continued, “I never thought it was right for him to hold you responsible for what happened with the last generation. I’ve always tried to talk him out of it. Ever since you two started getting close, I could see what was up, so I’d nag him about it from time to time. Luckily, it seems he finally listened. He hasn’t really crossed the line with you, has he?”
Except for that one time on the island, Kason really hadn’t done anything extreme to her.
Greta added, “Honestly, I was pretty shocked when I found out he wanted to marry you. I tried to talk him out of it, but he insisted. I was worried he might do something he couldn’t take back, so I came back from Mieashy.
“Maybe I was worrying too much. You two seem to get along well.”
They weren’t head over heels like most couples, but given all the bad history between their families, the fact that they could even get along was pretty good.
Greta ladled out a bowl of soup and set it in front of her, giving her a meaningful look.
“You know, Kason might act all cool and collected, but deep down, he’s really starved for love. Back then, I just gave him a little extra care, and he never let go of that kindness. He even insists on looking after me when I’m old. Just from that, I can

tell he’s a genuinely good man,” Greta said.
“A good man?” Heather wasn’t really buying it.
Greta said, “Well, at least to me, he knows how to appreciate kindness. He never went overboard with you, never tried to ruin you for good. Doesn’t that say something about who he really is?
“Back when he was little, he was always talking about avenging his parents. But when it comes to you, he just can’t go through with it. Haven’t you ever wondered why?”
Heather had thought about it before, but she didn’t dare to think too much.
“Are you saying I actually mean something to him?” she asked.
Greta nodded with a gentle smile and said, “I’ve seen him grow up, so I know him pretty well. That’s how it looks to me.”
Heather didn’t say a word, her gaze dropping as if lost somewhere deep in her own thoughts.
Greta went on, “You know, better to make peace than keep a feud going. Maybe turning old grudges into new bonds isn’t such a bad thing after all, right?”
These words seemed to snap Heather out of it. She just stared at Greta, a little dazed.
Greta smiled at her. “Maybe there really are some misunderstandings between you two. But if you work together to figure out what really happened back then, maybe you can move past all that old drama, No matter who was right or wrong, whoever owes the other can make

for it.”
“So what do you think I should do?” Heather asked.
Greta smiled and replied, “To warm his heart. Robyn said that Kason married you just to make you suffer or humiliate you. But honestly, I haven’t really seen him hurt you or do anything like that. So if that’s not it, maybe he just genuinely wants to marry you, wants a real home with you.”
“Is that even possible?” Honestly, Heather thought it was impossible. Everything that went down on that island was still fresh in her mind.
He just wanted to use marriage to keep her trapped, lock her up, and make her suffer. All while pretending it was perfectly justified.
But looking back, aside from those early days when he’d stay out all night just to make her look bad, he never actually did anything to really hurt her.
And even those moments of embarrassment didn’t hurt her, because none of it mattered to her anyway.
“You really think it’s impossible? Well, has he ever mentioned wanting kids with you?” Greta asked.
Heather was caught off guard for a second, but she nodded anyway. “Yeah, he did bring it up, but…”
Greta said, “Back when I was in Micashy and missing real hometown food, I’d walk into these restaurants that promised the real deal, but it was all just false advertising. One bite and I could tell it was nothing like authentic stuff.
“Sometimes, it’s not about what he says or does. You’ve got to see what’s really in his heart, try to understand what he truly feels. After all, you two are married now, right?”
