CHAPTER 10

After I leave the Alpha’s office with Michael by my side, I can’t help but feel relief.

First of all, for once in my life, I have someone who’s truly willing to put everything on the line to stand up for me. Second, as intimidating as Alpha Ethan comes across, he seems like a good guy.

Plus, the last comment he made got to me. A family. I don’t think anyone around here understands for how long I’ve dreamed of being a part of one.

Later, Michael takes me to the hospital, gathers the medical staff and introduces me, “I would like everyone to meet Amelia Bennett. She’s a former student of mine, the most promising and talented healer I have had a pleasure meeting Like always, I expect her to be accepted, and of course, treated with respect.’

After the staff welcomes me, Michael leads me towards a girl around my age. “Sophia, as you know, this is Amelia. She’s going to be working with us from today onwards. I’d really appreciate it if you could find a moment to show her around the hospital.”

“Oh, I would love to, Doctor Golden,” Sophia beams at Michael, then turns to me and excitedly thrusts her hand toward me. “I’m Sophia, I work as a healer here, it’s so nice to meet you.”

I shake her hand and return the smile, “likewise.

Honestly, it feels a little surreal to stand here and be so… accepted? I’ve heard many people in my old pack talk about Deadfang, not so kind things of course, so it’s rather nice to find out nobody in this pack is the monster my old pack painted them as.

Sophia doesn’t let go of my hand. Instead, she pulls me away from Michael and happily chats about the hospital and how much she enjoys the work she does.

“Okay, as you already know, werewolves heal quickly on their own. Most of the pa won’t even step foot into the hospital, so our job is to tend to more severe cases. It every day that we have to run around like headless chicken, but if there’s an attack a someone’s badly hurt, we take it seriously. No one gets left behind.” Sophia explains.

I don’t talk much, mainly listen, but the more she tells me, the more welcome I feel. Back home, after the rogue attack, I was treated like nonsense by the doctor and it was clear the administered me the medicine rather begrudgingly.

I have a feeling that it wouldn’t be the same case around here.

After she shows me around the hospital, we get to work. Sophia offers me her own scrubs since I don’t have any yet and I gladly accept them before she takes me under her wing and takes me with her to treat the patients.

By the end of my first day, I’m dead on my feet, but I’m filled with an overwhelming sense of

gratitude and belonging.

The second day passes more or less the same except for I don’t feel as tired after my shift and I leave the hospital so happy, I want to scream and cry at the same time. Everyone just.. accepted me simply because they want to, not because someone ordered them to.

On my third day, I arrive at the hospital bright and early. Something about today feels different as I change into my scrubs and go to check the patient charts.

Maybe it’s the looming thought that this is the third day of the promised probation period, or maybe it’s the fact that I already feel at home in a pack I don’t know if I’m allowed to call home.

Most of the morning goes by calmly – I do a couple of check-ins, some blood tests and a couple of x-rays. Sophia still hovers around me, but now she’s not doing it to show me anything, rather as someone who’s slowly warming their way into my life as a friend.

A couple of hours later, right when we’re supposed to take our lunch break, Alpha Ethan storms into the hospital. He’s followed by a man who’s larger than life itself, carrying a girl in

his arms.

They both are rushed to an empty room and Sophia and I follow them instantly. “What happened?” I ask just as the man, who Sophia tells me is the Beta of this pack, Joey, lays the pale girl onto the examination table.

“My sister, she’s.. I don’t know, something’s terribly wrong with her. Nina needs help, she’s only sixteen, I can’t let anything happen to her, she’s all I have,” Joey explains frantically.

Alpha Ethan’s eyes focus on me as he nods at me and growls, “fix her.”

I don’t mind the tone because I can see how worried he is and instantly get to work. I see the issue without needing to look at her – the girl is pale and blood is still seeping from the bite near her ankle.

Since Michael is away today, I’m a little nervous, but I push the feeling down and focus on what I’m here for – helping those in dire need for medical attention.

Sophia stands near and whispers, “you can do this, Amelia. You’re an amazing healer, everyone in this hospital knows it, it’s about time Alpha Ethan sees it for himself too.”

Nodding, I get to work and start cleaning the girl’s wound.

“Is that a rogue bite? Looks like a rogue bite to me? How bad is it?” Joey starts mumbling questions as I work, very clearly worried out of his mind.

I remain calm as I shake my head, forcing my voice to sound as soft as possible. “It’s not a rogue bite, Beta. It looks like a snake bite to me.”

Nina lets out a pained sound as I gently press the skin around the bite and hisses, “yes, it was a damn snake. Please help me, it hurts, it hurts so much.”

I look up right in the moment when Alpha looks at me and our eyes meet. “Alpha Ethan, has someone managed to catch the snake that bit her?”

“The guards are still searching,” Joey answers before Ethan can, sounding even more frantic than earlier.

Dread washes over me as Nina’s breathing turns heavier and more shallow. Swallowing loudly, I admit the one thing I’d never want to speak aloud in front of worried relatives, “without knowing what snake bit her, I’m not sure how to save her…”
