CHAPTER 14

Logan

After I leave Ronan’s house, I storm back to my office to look for the invitation Marcel mentioned. He’s hot on my heels, following me inside the office and watching how I tear the place apart until I find the envelope with Deadfang’s wax seal already broken.

My hands shake a little as I pull out the invitation and read it. Marcel is right, it’s a proposal for a meeting to discuss truce, scheduled for next week.

I get why my Beta thought it’s suspicious. Instead of offering neutral grounds to meet, Alpha Ethan wants the meeting to be held in his territory, which could come with a set of challenges.

As I sit down and read the invitation again, Marcel steps closer and clears his throat. “Are you planning to go? Maybe sending a response first, just to clarify the details would be a better idea? Logan, I’m not doubting your decisions, but right now, I’m not addressing you as the Beta, but rather your friend.”

I look up from the invitation and nod. “I know, Marcel. And I’m truly grateful for your worry. However, I can’t just let an opportunity as such slip through my fingers. I’m sure Amelia is there and I can use this,” I wave the invitation a little, “as my ticket to see it for myself.”

“I get it,” Marcel says softly, as if he’s scared to say the wrong thing. “But I also hope you know what you’re doing. Entering enemy’s territory, especially because of the invitation that’s sent out of the blue-”

“No,” I cut him off and stand up, placing my hands on the table and hovering over it. “It’s not as much about the invitation as it is about finding Amelia. She was never given the permission to leave.”

Just as Marcel opens his mouth again, most likely to argue again, the office door bursts open and my mother storms in. She’s red-faced and wide-eyed, looking like a woman who’s heading into a battle of her lifetime.

“Logan Grayson, what the hell do you think you’re doing?!” She snarls, not bothering with pleasantries. The use of my full name is proof that she’s beyond pissed.

As soon as I see the look on her face, I immediately understand that her visit has to be Ronan’s doing. That rat of a man definitely told her I’m planning to go look for Amelia.

Now, my anger towards Ronan doubles, if not triples. That slimy bastard is inserting himself into matters he has business to poke at. It’s such a typical thing to do for him – for years, he’s crossed lines and his favorite way to manipulate events to his advantage has always been by involving my mother.

Before today, I never cared enough to remind him of his place, but now, he’s gone too far. This is the last time Ronan has the gall to attempt to manipulate my decisions, even if stopping him is the last thing I do.

But first, I need to deal with my mother before she explodes from anger.

With a deep sigh, I walk around the desk and stop in front of her, crossing my arms. “What are you doing here, mom?”

“Don’t you question me, young man,” she hisses and jabs her finger against my chest. “Better answer what are you thinking!? In what world do you think looking for that girl is a good idea?”

While I’d prefer to tell her to leave, it never works with my mother, so I pinch the bridge of my nose and try to calm down. “Mom, what you’re doing is unnecessary. Please, don’t worry yourself with my decisions and get some rest.”

“That won’t happen and you know it! Answer my question!” She insists.

I side-glance at Marcel and he looks just as frustrated as I feel. Of course, he too, knows why my mother is here and who ratted on me.

“First of all, Amelia has never been given permission to leave the pack territory. Second, as someone who was born in this pack and grew up here, she knows too much about our pack. And third, she’s also the woman who was married to me for a little over a year. We don’t know if she ever went through paperwork in my office or not. At the end of the day, she knows the pack too well and joining a rival pack isn’t just betrayal, it poses a threat to the safety of our people. So, yes mother, I’ll keep looking for her.

((

The anger fades from her expression and soon is replaced with a look of understanding. Shoot, I didn’t think of it that way. I’m sorry, I was worried you’re looking for her because you want her back.”

“I just explained myself to you, mom. There’s no need to question everything I do. Remember that while I respect you as the woman who gave birth to me, you need to learn how to respect. me as an Alpha.” I tell her and walk back to my seat behind the desk.

“You’re right, you’re right,” she mutters and clasps her hands together. “Just don’t forget to bring extra warriors for safety, okay? Alpha or not, you’re still my child and I don’t want to see you hurt.”

I nod and wait for her to leave, but she hovers around, then speaks again. “I think that even if the negotiations fail, that girl must be brought back here anyway. Amelia is a useless wolf, I’d rather see her leave then arrive, but you do have a point about her knowledge. It’s not like she can offer anything, so I’m sure Deadfang won’t have an issue handing her over to you.”

Somehow, I manage to remain straight-faced as nod in agreement while my hands pull into tight fists under the desk. Mother’s attitude hasn’t changed, but today it’s really rubbing me the wrong way.

“Well, I’ll leave you to it,” she mutters and I watch her nod at Marcel, then turn towards the door. As she grabs the handle, she looks at me over her shoulder. “Right! I think it’s about

My jaw ticks with tension as I nod at her once. “Don’t worry, mom, I’ll make sure it’s the first thing I do once I return from Deadfang.”
