Chapter 16
“Mr. Grover,” Adrian called out, his eyes dark and stormy. In a tone that made it clear he wouldn’t accept no for an answer, he asked, “Care to have a drink with me?”
Tyler stared at the bottle of red wine in front of him, his throat tightening. For some reason, an odd feeling twisted in his chest. Adrian seemed to be a little hostile toward him.
Alas, Adrian radiated an imposing presence that seemed to have solidified in the air. It was like a net that enveloped the entire room. Tyler found it impossible to refuse Adrian’s request.
The server came over to the table and uncorked the bottle of wine, retreating once more after filling a glass for Adrian.
Steadying his nerves, Tyler picked up the glass and smiled at Adrian, “To you, Mr. Hawke.”
With that, he downed the red wine in one gulp.
Adrian didn’t hesitate either, finishing his own glass with ease.
Tyler thought that would be the end of it. However, at the flick of Adrian’s finger, the server returned and refilled both of their glasses.
“Mr. Grover,” Adrian said as he swirled the wine in his.glass. “How can one glass of wine be enough?”
Tyler’s expression stiffened. His instincts had been right earlier, but why was Adrian picking on him?
He wasn’t about to let himself be rattled by Adrian, though. After all, the Grovers were a prominent family in Hydroton as well. That being said, it wouldn’t serve any purpose to offend Adrian in any way.
Tyler had no choice but to raise his glass again and say with a smile, “How could I refuse your friendly gesture, Mr. Hawke?”
He drained the wine a second time. After drinking, however, his brows pinched tight, and his expression became a little stiff.
Truth be told, he disliked drinking red wine and always felt uncomfortable when he did. It wasn’t a physical reaction but a result of his mental aversion to wine.
Stephanie was aware of that.
That was why, in the past, whenever Tyler had to drink wine during a business meeting, she would step in to drink on his behalf. No matter how much was poured, she drank it all.
Even if people frowned on her for doing it, even if they deliberately made things hard on her, she accepted every glass anyway.
And, even when she had to drink until she could barely stay conscious, she would still smile at

Tyler and say all that mattered was the fact that he didn’t have to deal with any discomfort.
But today…
When Tyler saw the server pouring him yet another glass of wine, he turned toward Stephanie, only to find that she was calmly partaking in the bowl of soup before her.
She had no intention of drinking the wine on his behalf.
Tyler felt a surge of discomfort in his heart, one more intense than the one he felt when drinking the wine.
Glass after glass, Adrian continued to press him to drink. After downing several glasses of wine, he felt like he was at his limit. The alcohol was starting to get to him.
He wasn’t that much of a drinker. While he could handle beer well enough, wine had a higher
alcohol content.
Once the first bottle of wine was emptied, the server uncorked a second one.
Tyler felt like he was about to lose his mind. He couldn’t resist attempting to change the subject. “Mr. Hawke, I heard you acquired a piece of land in Lainesbury-
“Mr. Grover,” Adrian said, not even allowing Tyler to finish his sentence. “Let’s just have a few drinks today. I’m not interested in discussing business.”
Under the table, Tyler’s fists were tightly curled, but in the end, he chose to put up with it. There was no reason to offend Adrian over something this insignificant.
After even more glasses of wine, Tyler could barely hold himself together. Instinctively, he glanced at Stephanie, only to find that she didn’t even spare him a glance.
In fact, she got to her feet and informed the others politely, “Please excuse me while I use the restroom.”
She left the room right after she finished speaking.
Tyler watched as she walked away. It felt as if the wine he’d just drunk had clogged up his
chest, leaving him on the verge of suffocation.
