Chapter 19

Even when Adrian was under the influence of the aphrodisiacs, he still managed to exhibit such immense self-control, to the point where he even coughed up blood.

Stephanie wondered just what kind of a man he was.

When she returned to the room where they’d been eating earlier, she found that it was now surrounded by a group of bodyguards in black suits. They looked like Adrian’s men.

Tom, Gary, and the others were sitting in the room, trading confused gazes.

When Gary saw Stephanie, he swiftly called out, “You’re finally back, Ms. Ford! What’s… going on right now?”

From his point of view, the entire situation was rather strange. Adrian had abruptly left in the middle of drinking. Following that, Tyler began puking his guts out, but he also left after receiving a call and saying that something urgent had come up.

The rest of them waited around for ages, only to see no sign of either Adrian or Tyler returning. Instead, a group of bodyguards came and confiscated all of the food and drinks on the table, including the empty tableware.

What on earth had happened?

Since the situation involved Adrian, Stephanie didn’t elaborate. She’d just given them a few reassuring words before someone came over to escort her out of the restaurant.

It seemed like Adrian’s subordinates had been given the instructions not to let her stick around at the spot of the trouble any longer.

She said her goodbyes with Gary and the others before leaving.

After exiting the restaurant, she was just about to get a cab when she noticed an update on Kiara’s social media. There were two pictures, one of her heavily bandaged wrist and another featuring the side profile of the man peeling an apple for her.

It was Tyler.

The caption read, “Everything will be fine, as long as you are with me.”

Judging from the background of the pictures, they’d been taken at the hospital.

Stephanie put the pieces together. That explained why Tyler left in such a hurry despite having just vomited so violently.

Kiara had pulled a stunt, acting like she wanted to end her own life.

Whatever went on between those two stirred not the slightest ripple in Stephanie’s heart. She hailed a cab, went home, showered, and got ready to get a good night’s sleep.

Stephanie wanted to call Evan and ask how Adrian was doing, but doing so felt awkward to her.

She grabbed her phone and checked Adrian’s social media, but she didn’t see any updates. Well, she figured that since his subordinate had taken him to the hospital, he should be fine.

Yet, for some reason, she continued to feel worried. It took a long time before she finally drifted off to sleep.

Not long after Stephanie had woken up the next morning, she received a call from Evan.

“Ms. Ford, could you please come by the hospital?”

Stephanie’s heart clenched. “Is… Mr. Hawke okay?”

“Mr. Hawke is fine. I’m just calling to see if you could visit him at the hospital,” Evan said.

Stephanie agreed to come over. After all, Adrian seemed rather pitiable for having been plotted against like that. Plus, he was the one who helped her when her gastritis had flared up back then. No matter how she looked at it, visiting him seemed like the most appropriate thing to do.

What she didn’t expect was to arrive at the hospital entrance just as Tyler and Kiara were coming out, thus bumping into them.

Though Tyler’s face was rather pale, he was still carefully tending to Kiara with a look of pure concern, checking on her constantly.

Kiara spotted Stephanie first. “Ms. Ford? Did you come over to see me?”

“You flatter yourself,” Stephanie responded curtly.

“Can’t you see Kiki’s wrist, Steph? She’s hurt! She’s in a fragile state right now, both physically and mentally. How can you talk to her like that?” Tyler questioned.

Stephanie found it laughable.

It was one thing for Tyler to fall for Kiara’s staged suicide attempt, but was Stephanie expected to play the fool as well?

Stephanie’s reaction displeased Tyler even more.

“You-”

He was just about to lash out at her when the piercing sound of a vehicle horn cut through the air. When he glanced to the side, he noticed a truck that was careening out of control and barreling straight toward them.
