You Wed Your Past I Wed My Future novel Chapter 20

Chapter 20

Tyler’s first instinct was to rush over to Kiara, dragging her out of the way.

Stephanie, however, was frozen in place.

She knew she should move, but the scene unfolding before her was so similar to the car accident two years ago. In an instant, her entire body locked up.

“Steph!” Tyler shouted in panic.

And then, just as the worst was about to happen, another figure came charging over, pulling Stephanie into his arms. His grip clamped so tightly around her that it felt like he was going to crush her bones. He dragged her backward in a twisted, stumbling retreat, just barely avoiding the truck’s path.

Screams erupted all around them as the truck screeched to a stop, halting only inches before it would’ve plowed into the hospital building.

The driver tumbled, babbling in terror. “I’m sorry! I’m so sorry! The brakes stopped working all of a sudden. I’m truly sorry…”

But his apologies weren’t registering in Stephanie’s head. Her mind was consumed by the traumatic memory of the car accident two years ago.

It hurt so bad. Her legs were ruined. She could never dance again.

Would her mother, who was up in heaven, be sorely disappointed to know that she would never be able to dance ever again?

“Ms. Ford? Ms. Ford?”

The man beside her kept calling her name.

Stephanie lifted her ashen face to find that it was Adrian who was holding her.

So, it was him…

Her thoughts were still foggy. She tried to thank him, but she couldn’t utter a word. Her lips quivered hard.

Adrian frowned as a rare flash of panic appeared in his eyes.

“Are you already, Ms. Ford? Stephanie!”

“Steph!”

Just then, Tyler rushed over as well. “How are you feeling? Don’t scare me!”

Immediately, he felt an air of hostility surrounding him. When he looked up, he saw Adrian eyeing him sharply.

Why was it him again?

The look in Adrian’s eyes made the blood in Tyler’s veins turn cold, but he forced himself to act composed. “Thank you for saving Steph, Mr. Hawke. I think she must’ve had a fright. You should hand her over to me.”

He reached out to take Stephanie out of Adrian’s arms, but before he could even touch her, Adrian grabbed his wrist.

Adrian was so strong that Tyler winced in pain, his expression contorting.

“What’s the meaning of this, Mr. Hawke?” Tyler questioned.

“Get the hell out of the way,” Adrian snarled with an overwhelming rush of ferocity.

He flung Tyler’s hand aside as if he were tossing the trash. Then, he scooped Steph up in his arms and carried her into the hospital.

Tyler’s eyes widened. How could he let another man carry his woman like that!

“Adrian Hawke! Put Steph down right this minute—”

He tried to go after them, but Kiara gripped his shirt tightly.

“Are you going to leave me alone here, Ty?” she asked, her eyes red and tearful. “I-I’m so scared. That truck just came out of nowhere! I thought I was going to die… and my wrist is hurting again. Don’t go. Stay with me, please?’

“Kiki, you… But…’

Tyler’s jaw clenched as he stared at Adrian’s retreating figure.

“Ms. Ford will be fine. She didn’t get hit by the truck anyway,” Kiara said weepingly. “Ms. Ford snatched the project away from me, Ty. I’m already at my breaking point because of that. If you leave me now, I don’t know if I’ll resort to something foolish again…”

“Please don’t do anything rash again, Kiki,” Tyler exclaimed as he hurriedly hugged her. “I understand. I’ll always be with you.”

Kiara was right. Stephanie didn’t get hit by the truck anyway. She was probably just frightened, at most. She’d be back to normal soon enough.
