Stephanie’s heart jolted. What was he doing? Why did he have to bring up the very thing she wanted to avoid?

“I’m… very sorry about last night,” Adrian said.

Startled at first, she quickly smiled and said, “It’s fine. Last night’s situation had been… a special one. It’s not your fault.”

It did make her feel a bit awkward, but she never considered faulting Adrian for it. After all, he was a victim, too.

“Have you found the person who set you up?” Stephanie asked.

“Yeah,” Adrian confirmed with a nod. “Don’t worry about it.”

It’d been the handiwork of one of Hawke Group’s competitors. They’d secretly sent someone from Jetterpolis. After hearing that he’d be having dinner at that restaurant last night, the person bribed a server to spike his drink.

The initial plan was to take him away once the drug had taken effect and throw a woman at him. They would then use this incident to frame him for forcing himself on the woman.

Who would’ve thought that he would notice he’d been drugged so quickly and leave early?

Thankfully, he was the only one who had consumed the spiked alcohol. The others drank from bottles that hadn’t been tampered with, so they hadn’t been dragged into this mess because of

him.

It was also fortunate for Adrian that the drug didn’t have any other side effects. He had a pretty healthy body, too. So after getting his stomach pumped and receiving some fluids, plus a good night’s rest, he was back to normal now.

Since he didn’t elaborate any further, Stephanie didn’t pry either. She simply said softly, “I’m glad to hear that.”

“Apart from apologizing to you, I should also thank you properly,” Adrian said as he looked at her with indiscernible emotions. “I don’t know what I would’ve done without you last night.”

“It’s fine,” Stephanie said, shaking her head. “You’ve helped me before. And if you hadn’t saved me just now, once again, I would’ve…”

Her face turned pale, and she didn’t finish her sentence.

Adrian shot an imperceptible glance at her right leg. He’d already guessed the situation, but he didn’t bring it up. He knew it had to be a lingering trauma for her, and he didn’t want to twist the knife in her heart again.

“Have you had breakfast yet?” he asked, changing the subject.

“Not yet,” Stephanie replied out of habit.

She hadn’t had time to eat before she got the call and came to the hospital.

“I haven’t either,” Adrian said, picking up his jacket from the side. “Come, Ms. Ford. To celebrate the fact that we both survived a harrowing incident, allow me to treat you… to breakfast.”

His solemn tone somehow added a flair of dry humor to his words, and she found herself chuckling.

“It would be my honor to accept, Mr. Hawke.”

Adrian’s face stayed impassive, but as he turned away, his lips tugged up ever so slightly.

The car came to a stop outside a home-style restaurant.

Stephanie had heard about this place before. It was said that the restaurant served an excellent breakfast menu. However, the owner had an eccentric temper, and breakfast wasn’t always available-even the portions were limited at times.

Yet, that only served to draw even more attention from intrigued customers.

Still, she’d never been here before. Work kept her busy all the time, and all of her rare pockets of leisure went to getting some proper rest. She couldn’t spare the time to make the trip out here just for breakfast.

Adrian opened the car door for Stephanie, and when she stepped out, she was greeted by the crisp, misty morning air.

She looked up at the entrance and saw the restaurant’s name written in beautiful calligraphy.

Before the two of them could enter the restaurant, a middle-aged man came out to greet them.

“It’s been so long, Mr. Hawke,” Barnaby Langston, the middle-aged man, said with a smile. “I think it was three years ago when you last dined at my restaurant, right?”

“It’s been a while,” Adrian replied with a light nod.

Barnaby’s gaze fell on Stephanie, and his brows arched in surprise. “And this is…”
