Barnaby wanted to ask if Stephanie was Adrian’s girlfriend, but he was afraid of coming off as too presumptuous if he were wrong about it. Though the two did make a good match.
“This is Ms. Stephanie Ford. She’s… a friend of mine,” Adrian said.
“It’s nice to meet you,” Stephanie greeted Barnaby politely.
While she and Adrian hadn’t known each other for long, considering all that they’d been through together, it wouldn’t be wrong to call each other friends.
“Welcome, Ms. Ford!” Barnaby said with a cheerful smile. “Quick, come in. I started cooking the moment I got the call from Evan. Everythings almost ready.”
Apart from them and the waitstaff, there was no one else in the restaurant. It didn’t seem to be open for breakfast today.
As soon as Adrian and Stephanie sat down, the waitstaff served up two plates of mini quiches. The pastry looked buttery and flaky, while the filling was hearty and warm.
Stephanie hadn’t been feeling all that hungry earlier, but her appetite was stirring now.
“Mr. Langston makes the best mini quiches,” Adrian said as he picked one up with a pair of serving tongs and set it down on her plate. “Try it.
The moment Stephanie took a bite, the rich and melty custard filled her mouth, and her eyes lit up. It tasted divine.
A small smile crept over Adrian’s face when he took in her delighted expression.
Barnaby, along with a few other waitstaff, started bringing out even more food. Pumpkin soup, crepes, stuffed toast, and other food soon filled up the entire table.
“That’s everything,” Barnaby said with a chuckle. “I’ve brought you every single breakfast menu item available. Enjoy.”
With that, he and his staff slipped away, leaving the two to have their breakfast in peace.
The mist slowly scattered, and the sunlight came in through the wooden lattice of the window which added a pattern to their shadows.
When it came to breakfast, Stephanie would simply grab a quick bite to fill her up. She would’ve been satisfied with a piece of toast and two eggs. However, she ate quite heartily today.
Everything tasted great, and as the warm food hit her stomach, it seemed to melt away every
chill in her.
Stephanie and Adrian ate in silence. Now and then, he would use the serving tongs to top up her plate with some crepes or quiches. He even served her a bowl of pumpkin soup.

When they were almost done eating, Stephanie received a message on her phone.
“The man died a year ago. He took his own life in prison.”
Her gaze stiffened, and her lips pressed thin.
The car accident had been such a painful and traumatic ordeal for her that once she found out the driver had been sentenced to prison, she no longer paid any attention to him.
It wasn’t until she overheard Tyler during his call and found out the truth about the accident that she secretly asked someone to locate the driver in prison. She wanted to see if she could get any information from him.
But now, she’d just been informed that he’d taken his own life a year ago.
He was the key witness in this matter.
Nevertheless, Stephanie soon composed herself and responded to the text. “Check and see if he has any living relatives. Find out where they are.”
The person texted back right away. “Okay.”
Adrian noticed her sudden change of mood. “What’s wrong?”
Snapping back to reality, Stephanie smiled faintly and said, “It’s nothing.”
He didn’t push the matter. They finished eating and said their goodbyes to Barnaby before heading out.
“Where do you live? I’ll give you a ride home,” Adrian said as he opened the car door for her.
She knew hailing a cab from this location would be nearly impossible, so she didn’t decline his offer. “Could you drop me off at Grover Group?”
Adrian’s expression turned cold. “Ms. Ford, what you need to do right now is rest properly- not keep throwing your life away for that man.”
