They had lunch at Adelina’s place, the kind of meal that felt cozy and comforting, just like always. Afterward, Catherine couldn’t help feeling a little curious about Lawrence’s dad. She didn’t want to ask directly, so she turned to Adelina instead.
“Mom, do you still have any family photo albums around? I’d love to see what Lawrence looked like as a kid.”
Adelina’s whole face lit up. “Of course. Give me a second, I’ll bring them over.”
Lawrence slipped outside to answer a call. Adelina returned with a thick photo album, flipping it open as she sat beside Catherine.
“You know, Lawrence was such a rascal when he was small. His dad had to put him in line more than once. But as he grew up, he calmed down a lot. He doesn’t say much these days, but he’s got his own ideas, and he sticks to them.”
Catherine hesitated, then asked softly, “Was his dad really strict with him?”
Adelina laughed and shook her head. “Not really. He can be stubborn and a little harsh with words, but he’s got a good heart. He only pushed Lawrence because he wanted him to do well. And don’t worry, he already knows about you two getting married.”
Catherine felt her heart skip. “So… does he mind?”
Adelina smiled, her tone reassuring. “Catherine, just wait until you meet him. He’s actually a very fair person.”
Catherine glanced out the window at Lawrence, who stood tall and calm outside. It was hard to imagine this steady, mature man being a troublemaker as a kid.
Just then, Susan called Catherine to the kitchen, asking how much bird’s nest soup she wanted. Catherine answered, and as soon as Adelina left, she opened the photo album on her lap. Sure enough, she found a few childhood photos of Lawrence. Even as a little boy, he was handsome, with that unmistakable charm in his smile.
Flipping through the pages, Catherine started looking for photos of Lawrence’s father. She really wanted to see what he looked like, and deep down, she hoped she could help ease any tension between father and son. She was determined to make a good impression.
