"Bruce, you know exactly how you feel about Sonja. You can fool everyone else, but you can't fool yourself."
Kristin's tone grew serious. "Did you hear? Sonja was supposed to marry that guy from the Duncan family, but suddenly, the engagement is off."
"What? It's off?" Bruce froze, his heart pounding in his chest.
"Yep. It's really over. I've checked with several people, and it's true."
"Why did they call it off?"
Kristin let out a sigh. "Why do you think? Stephen's just a spoiled rich boy. The Campbells don't want someone like that anymore, so the old family promise doesn't matter."
She paused, then added, "If you want to go for it, it's not too late. Just be honest with Rebecca, maybe give her something extra. I've always liked that girl, and she's been with you for so long. You should end things on good terms."
"Mom, I don't want that..."
Bruce's mind was spinning. He understood what his mom was hinting at, but breaking up with Rebecca had never crossed his mind.
He glanced back at the center of the lobby, suddenly realizing Rebecca wasn't there.
He cut the call short. "Mom, I have to go."
Bruce searched everywhere in the hospital lobby, but Rebecca was nowhere to be found.
He called her. It rang for ages before she finally picked up.
"Sorry, something came up. I had to leave."
"Okay. By the way, you said there was something you wanted to talk to me about. What is it?"
Rebecca sat stiffly in the back of a taxi, her grip on the phone so tight her knuckles turned white.
She thought she'd run out of tears for this relationship, but now that the moment had come, her heart still broke.
She swallowed hard, trying to hold it together. "Let’s talk in person when I’m done with work."
Breaking up face to face was the right thing to do. That was Rebecca’s way.
Before he could say more, Justin jumped in. "Greg, like I said, it’s just for the proposal. No one actually expects you to build it right now. Why are you making such a big deal about it?"
"It’s always the same with these pre-sales pitches. I don’t get why you’re being so stubborn!"
Greg’s face went red. He slammed his book on the desk.
It fell to the floor with a loud smack.
"Yeah, it’s always like this! You guys in pre-sales and sales hype everything up, make the product sound amazing, get the client all excited. But when it’s time to actually build it, and we can’t deliver, suddenly R&D gets blamed."
Greg was a tech guy, not someone who liked arguing. After ranting for a bit, he looked flustered, his face and neck flushed.
He avoided looking at Rebecca, assuming she’d take Justin’s side because she was in sales. Honestly, he and the other engineers didn’t think much of her.
She was young, and she was from sales.
And let’s be real, a young, pretty girl in sales... everyone thought they knew how she got ahead.
