Rebecca didn’t give it a second thought. She slipped into her pajamas, opened the door, and called out, “Oh, you’re still here. I thought you’d gone to sleep already.”
As she stepped out, her hand paused halfway through smoothing her shirt. Those shoes… those legs…
She looked up in shock. Stephen was standing right there!
Rebecca’s arms shot up to cover her chest. She realized, far too late, that she hadn’t put on a bra.
“Sorry, I let myself in without asking,” Stephen said. He turned away quickly, trying to play it cool, but his cheeks are more flushed than usual.
Rebecca felt her face getting warmer. “It’s okay… thank you for bringing my pajamas.”
The embarrassment was almost too much. She kept her eyes on the floor and moved forward, but whether it was the nerves or her head still spinning from earlier, she managed to trip right over the carpet and landed flat.
“Careful.” Stephen reacted fast, catching her around the waist.
He was so tall that, holding her like that from behind, he couldn’t help but catch a glimpse of her…
Stephen’s ears turned bright red and he looked away in a hurry.
Rebecca wanted to disappear. If only a hole would open up and swallow her whole. She squeezed her eyes shut, her voice shaky. “Th-thank you.”
She darted into the next room, threw on a jacket, and came back out, trying to act casual.
Right then, Cindy burst in from the hallway.
“Whoa, you’re here, bro?” Cindy’s eyes lit up when she saw the coffee on the table. “You’re the best!”
“Rebecca, this one’s for you,” Stephen said, handing her a cup.
So he’d come by to bring them coffee to help with their hangovers.
Rebecca took her cup and kept her head down, quietly sipping.
Cindy went off on a rant with her brother sitting right there. First, she complained about the presentation earlier that day, how Sonja claimed her laptop broke. Cindy was convinced Sonja did it on purpose. Then she moved on to Austin, fuming about how he forced them to drink so much that night.
Stephen nodded every now and then, but he clearly wasn’t listening. His eyes kept drifting to Rebecca, who was practically hiding behind her coffeecup.
His mind was full of images that definitely didn’t belong there.
