Betrayed and Dumped: She Rose Stronger Than Ever novel Chapter 149

She peppered Avery’s cheeks with quick kisses, then bounced downstairs, practically glowing as she headed for lunch. Alan couldn’t help but notice. “What’s got you two so happy?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

“It’s nothing, Alan,” Sonja said, waving him off.

Avery shot him a look. “Eat your lunch and stop trying to figure out girls’ business.”

Alan grumbled under his breath, embarrassed, and turned his focus back to his plate.

That afternoon, Sonja went back to the office like it was any other day. When Bruce spotted her coming out of the meeting room, he was caught off guard. “You sure you don’t want to rest a little more?”

Sonja smiled, calm and composed. “I’m fine. Actually, I have two things I want to talk to you about.”

Bruce held the door open for her. “Come in.”

He watched her carefully, and when he saw the steady look in her eyes, he finally relaxed. Sonja was even tougher than he thought. She knew how to get her feelings under control.

“So, what’s up?” Bruce asked.

Sonja sat down across from him. “Here’s the thing. We really need an R&D Director. I’m always out talking to clients, and that’s slowing down our development team. We’re falling behind.”

She slid a resume across the desk. “This is Shawn. He was my friend back when I was studying abroad. He’s got a Ph.D. too, and he’s working at one of the biggest tech companies overseas. He’s really interested in NovaStack Cloud.”

Bruce took his time reading through the resume. Shawn was clearly impressive. And if he was Sonja’s friend, that was good enough for Bruce. “Alright. Let’s do it, your call.”

“And the second thing?” Bruce asked.

Sonja hesitated for a second, pressing her lips together. Word of their loss at arbitration had already spread through the company like wildfire. Lottie had picked up on a lot of whispers in the halls. People were starting to doubt Sonja’s abilities. Some were even questioning her Ph.D., like maybe it wasn’t legit.
