"Does your brother know about this?"

Cindy shook her head. "There’s no way I’d let him find out." She blinked at Rebecca. "Honestly, you’re the only person I’ve ever told. Please keep it to yourself, okay? And when you’re around him, just act like you don’t know a thing."

By him, she obviously meant Jon.

Rebecca wrapped her in a quick hug. "I promise."

Cindy gave a crooked smile. "What’s with the hug? I don’t need comfort. I’ve honestly forgotten all about him. If you hadn’t introduced us today, I wouldn’t have even recognized him."

Rebecca could tell Cindy was just pretending. If she’d really moved on, she would have chatted with Jon like it was nothing, not stayed so quiet the whole time.

But from what she’d just heard, Jon and his ex had broken up. So maybe, just maybe, there was a chance for Cindy after all...

Rebecca pushed those thoughts aside and smiled at Cindy. "Things are pretty quiet at work. Come on, let’s go shopping this afternoon."

Cindy stared at her. "Are you seriously skipping work? You’re the boss!"

Rebecca grinned and winked. "Skipping work? Please. We’re going to visit a client, obviously."

Both of them burst out laughing.

Before long, it was time for the opening ceremony at Dr. Palmer’s new research base. Rebecca and Stephen drove over together. The base was in a campus park just outside the north gate of Larkhaven College. The park worked as an incubator, a special project from the city to help the university and its partners grow. A bunch of school and company collaborations had started there.

When they got out of the car, Rebecca spotted Caleb waiting by the entrance.

"Caleb," she called, waving him over. He hurried across. "Rebecca. Mr. Duncan."

Stephen just raised an eyebrow and didn’t say anything about the difference in how Caleb greeted them.

Caleb led them inside for a tour of the office. The place was huge and bright, with everything set up perfectly. Rebecca tried out one of the computers. The hardware and software were both top of the line.

Just then, Dr. Palmer walked in.

"Those are for the rest of the members. This time, everyone in the professor’s group gets to join the project."

Rebecca nodded. "Is there a research plan yet?"

"Still in the works," Caleb answered. "We’ll announce everything after the New Year."

"Perfect. The two patents I’m working on won’t take much time, so I can join you guys for the project."

"For real? That’s awesome! With your help, everything will go so much faster!"

Just then, the noise outside started getting louder. The ceremony was about to start. Rebecca suggested, "Let’s head out and take a look."

At the entrance, the university president, the dean, and other school leaders were shaking hands and chatting with investors.

Rebecca’s gaze landed on three people in the crowd. For a split second, her heart skipped a beat. Dr. Palmer had mentioned three investors investing the new base. Could NovaStack Cloud and the Larson Group really be among them?
