Every month, the R&D team had to update the investors on their latest progress. No one wanted to see the funding go to waste. The team showed up early, and the investors arrived soon after. Bruce, Sonja, and Paul all took their usual seats.

Rebecca ended up sitting directly across from Paul. Ever since that night, she had been avoiding him, her suspicions keeping her at arm’s length. Today, though, there was no escape. All she could do was keep her eyes down and pretend she didn’t notice him.

Paul had been planning to wait until after that to ask Rebecca out, but now that she seemed to know, maybe there was no reason to wait.

Sonja picked up on the strange tension almost right away. She glanced at Paul and caught him staring at Rebecca. Her heart skipped a beat. Paul was into Rebecca? The thought was a shock. No way. That couldn’t be right. Sonja glared at Rebecca, her mind racing. So she was that type, huh? She really knew how to attract men.

Dr. Palmer was running late, caught up in something else, so Caleb stepped in to lead the meeting. He welcomed the investors, then gave everyone a rundown of what the team had accomplished lately. It was impressive, as always. Dr. Palmer’s students had a reputation for getting results.

But what caught people off guard was just how much Rebecca had contributed. Caleb made sure everyone knew. “I want to give a special shout-out to Rebecca. If it weren’t for her, we wouldn’t have gotten this far so quickly.”

A few others nodded in agreement. “Yeah, seriously. Rebecca saved us.”

Rebecca felt her cheeks heat up from all the praise. “Thank you, but it really was a group effort,” she said quietly.
