Someone waved it off, not really caring. “Scores don’t matter. Rebecca’s talent is way beyond anything you can measure on paper.”
Rebecca looked up and locked eyes with Martha, who was definitely trying to provoke her. Her instincts had been right. Martha was coming for her. Rebecca thought back, trying to figure out what she might have done to upset her, but nothing came to mind. Still, since Martha was being so pushy, Rebecca couldn’t just stay quiet.
“I took the exam. Scored 485. I was ranked first in both the written and the interview, and I got the acceptance letter.” She paused, her tone softening just a bit. “But for personal reasons, I decided not to go. It was really a stupid choice. I’m sorry for letting Dr. Palmer down.”
485 out of 500. The room went silent for a moment, then the excitement started to bubble up.
“Wait, you’re the legend from the engineering department? That was you?”
“No one’s ever beaten your exam record. That’s insane!”
“I think I remember Dr. Palmer mentioning you. What a shame you didn’t end up joining.”
Even Martha looked shocked. The genius everyone talked about was actually Rebecca. Martha clenched her fists, her face burning. Thank god she hadn’t said anything even more embarrassing earlier. But while Martha was busy worrying about herself, everyone else was way more interested in why Rebecca gave up such an opportunity.
Rebecca smiled, a little regretful. “Back then…I made a dumb decision for someone who didn’t deserve it. But I’m glad I finally woke up.”
There was a knowing silence, the kind that passes through a group of people who all get it. Obviously, Rebecca had been burned by love. Now everyone just wanted to know who that clueless jerk was.
The clueless jerk, Bruce, felt his shoulders tense. Suddenly, it all came rushing back. That year, when Rebecca found out he was starting his own company, she’d dropped her graduate school plans without even hesitating. When he heard about it, he’d held her hands and promised he’d never let her down.
As soon as his tall figure disappeared, Sonja stomped her foot, furious. Bruce, just wait. One day, you’ll be the one begging me!
Still, sulking wouldn’t help her now. There was a crack between her and Bruce, and she needed to fix it fast.
She grabbed her phone. “Hey, Shawn. We’re going ahead with the product launch as planned, but move the date up to mid-March. I know it’s tight, but you can handle a few all-nighters, right?”
She smirked. “Yes, I know Sunforge Tech’s launch is the same day. That’s the point. We’re going head-to-head. I’ll invite everyone in the industry, all our clients. We’ll have a bigger crowd than Sunforge, you’ll see. Where do you think people will go?”
After hanging up, Sonja drove home. Once she got in, she headed straight to the study, found her mom, Avery, and told her everything that happened that day.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
