“I heard from our straight-shooter in dev that Rebecca’s code is amazing. It’s so clean and efficient it made him question his life choices.”

“If that’s really true, she’s basically unstoppable. She can land clients, she writes killer code, and she actually gets product development. Why is she working for anyone else? She could just run her own company.”

Greg walked into the breakroom with his coffee mug just in time to catch the gossip. He frowned, his whole vibe going chilly.

“Wow, everyone’s got a lot of free time, huh? Is your work done? Have you even checked your code?”

Instant silence. Nobody dared say a word. They just ducked their heads and hurried off.

Rebecca and Justin came out of the conference room right then, bumping into Greg as he finished pouring his coffee. Rebecca gave him a polite nod and invited him, “Greg, we’re heading to Meridian Tech tomorrow for a pre-sales presentation. Want to come with us?”

Normally, these presentations needed both sales and technical folks. Justin and Rebecca could handle the sales pitch, and if Greg agreed, he’d cover the technical side.

Greg just gave a cold little laugh. “You’re basically a one-woman army, business and tech both. I wouldn’t want to embarrass myself in front of you.”

He walked right past them and headed for his desk.

As soon as he sat down, his phone buzzed with a new message. Greg glanced at it and couldn’t help but smirk. It was from an old colleague who now worked at Meridian Tech. Greg had already asked about the upcoming bid and learned that Meridian Tech was taking it super seriously. Tons of companies were competing, including NovaStack Cloud, the industry unicorn.

But here was the real kicker. The new VP at NovaStack Cloud was apparently college buddies with Scott, the head of technology at Meridian Tech. They were really close.

With connections like that...

Greg grinned to himself. He was honestly looking forward to seeing Rebecca crash and burn with her rushed product.

Later that afternoon, Stephen called Rebecca upstairs for a meeting. She updated him on her progress, mentioning the pre-sales presentation at Meridian Tech the next day.

Stephen smiled. “Want me to step in? I’ve met their GM a couple of times.”

“That’s okay,” Rebecca said. “We’re really well prepared.”

Stephen liked her confidence. “Alright. If anything comes up, just let me know.”

The meeting wrapped up and Rebecca was about to leave when the door swung open.

Um... okay? Rebecca had no idea what Cindy meant by that.

Stephen just sighed, rubbing his forehead. His sister could be a handful.

He shot her a look. “It’s work hours. No personal stuff allowed. Ask Liam to grab you a Coke. Then get downstairs, and make sure you update Ms. Harper on your work.”

Cindy raised her eyebrows, crossing her arms. “Actually, I do have work stuff to talk to you about.”

Rebecca got the hint. “I’ll leave you two to it. See you later.”

As soon as the door closed, Cindy flopped onto the guest sofa like a stuffed animal without bones.

Stephen frowned. “Seriously, what are you doing?”

Cindy stared right at him. “You like Rebecca, don’t you?”
