“Wait, so how did Sonja even get her master’s degree?” someone asked, curiosity all over their face. “I went through all the gossip. Sure, her PhD might be fake, but her bachelor’s and master’s degrees look legit.”

“Oh please, she cheated on every exam. Paid people to take them for her.”

“No way… That’s so blatant. Didn’t anyone notice?”

“Of course people noticed. Someone even reported her to the university, but rumor has it the Campbell family threw a ton of money at the problem and it just disappeared.”

“Figures. Money can fix anything, huh? No wonder the Campbell Group is falling apart. Guess they spent all their cash covering up for her fake degrees. Karma’s a bitch.”

Under the same night sky, Rebecca wasn’t the only one lying awake.

Shawn stood on his balcony, cigarette burning between his fingers. He took a long drag and let the smoke curl up into the air. Tonight, the moon was extra bright, hanging low and round above the city.

He finished his cigarette right as his phone started ringing from the bedroom. Shawn moved inside, unhurried, and checked the caller ID. A small, mocking smile played on his lips when he saw the name. He let it ring a few extra seconds before finally picking up, his voice sliding back into that lazy, careless tone.

“Dr. Campbell. Shouldn’t you be all cuddled up with your fiancé at this hour? What are you doing calling me?”

Sonja clenched her teeth. She knew he was doing it on purpose, just to get under her skin. That was Shawn for you. Most of the time, he came across as calm and put-together, but sometimes he could be so sharp you just wanted to strangle him.

Sonja snorted. “You told me once that NovaStack Cloud goes public, those shares will be worth fifty times more. If I buy them at ten times, I still make a forty-fold profit.”

Shawn laughed, low and amused. “You trust me that much? At ten times the price, sure, you’ll find people willing to sell. But you’ve got two problems. First, every option transfer has to go through Bruce. You need to figure out what to say when he asks. Second, you need the cash up front. If you close the deal and then can’t pay, those guys won’t give you a second chance.”

Sonja lifted her chin. “Don’t worry, I’ll handle it. And Bruce won’t know a thing. I’m his fiancée now, remember?”

After she hung up, Avery pulled her shawl tighter around her shoulders. “What did Shawn say?”

The rumors today, plus the way Kelley had acted, made one thing clear to Avery. Waiting until Sonja married Bruce to slowly take control of NovaStack Cloud just wasn’t an option anymore. She didn’t have the time or the patience to wait. After thinking it all through, she knew she had to act now.
