Stephen swallowed hard and looked down, reaching for her ankle. Her skin was pale, but her ankle was so swollen it looked like one big bruise, blood running down over her foot.

“I’ll call an ambulance.”

“No,” Joan said, grabbing his hand. “It hurts too much, I can’t wait for an ambulance. Please, just take me to the ER. I’m scared I’ll lose my foot.”

He hesitated before he answered. “Okay. Can you stand?”

Joan bit her lip, glancing up at him. “Can you carry me? I don’t have the strength.”

Without a word, Stephen scooped her up and set her gently in the back seat of the car. He never once met her eyes.

On the way, Joan tried a few times to talk to him, but Stephen just stayed silent.

They got to the hospital as fast as possible. After checking her in at the ER, doctors and nurses rushed over to help.

Stephen finally had a moment to breathe. He pulled out his phone to let Rebecca know not to wait up, but the screen was black. Out of battery.

The minutes crawled by.

Joan was emotional and anxious, and the doctor eventually called Stephen in, hoping he could help calm her down.

He felt completely drained.

Stephen had never imagined Joan would come back, let alone that they’d meet again like this.

The past felt like a distant breeze, already swept away with time. Seeing Joan again, he was surprised at first, but after that, he just felt strangely calm.

Now that things had settled down, Stephen couldn’t help but think it was all a little too strange.

When he left the parking lot, he was sure the street had been empty. How had he ended up running into Joan? Where had she even come from?

The next morning, Joan woke up and immediately looked around the hospital room.

No sign of Stephen. She bit her lip.

Back then, even a scratch on her hand would have made him worry nonstop. Now, she’d fractured her ankle and he hadn’t even stayed with her.

She picked up her phone, ready to call him.
