Rebecca slid her arms around his waist. “Alright, I promise I won’t. But can you tell me what really happened between you two? I want to know.”
Stephen knew every piece of Rebecca’s past. He’d been there for all of it. But all she had of his was a rough outline, just shadows and guesses.
He let out a breath. “It’s way too hot out here. Let’s get in the car, and I’ll tell you everything.”
Neil had been the Duncan family’s butler, loyal and hardworking for over ten years. After his wife died, he moved into the Duncan estate with his daughter, Joan. The whole family treated the Knotts like their own. Joan was close in age to the Duncan kids, so she got to attend a private school thanks to their connections.
As the years passed, Joan and Stephen only grew closer. After high school, they officially got together.
Someone in the Duncan family wasn’t thrilled. To them, Stephen dating a butler’s daughter just didn’t sit right. Stephen’s dad and uncle were especially against it.
But Stephen’s grandfather, George, saw things differently. He pointed out that Joan had grown up right in front of them, so they knew exactly what kind of person she was. Honestly, she felt safer than any stranger could. With George standing his ground, the family finally agreed to accept them.
But the good times didn’t last. Neil fell into gambling, hard.
It didn’t take long for him to lose everything.
With debt collectors breathing down his neck and nowhere left to go, Neil turned desperate. He set his sights on the Duncan family and planned a kidnapping. But the plan fell apart. In the chaos that followed, there was a fire. Stephen’s father, his uncle, and Neil all died in it.
“After all of that, my grandfather and mom told me I had to break up with Joan. I knew she was innocent. She didn’t do anything, but she still had to pay for her father’s mistakes. At first, I just couldn’t accept it. I was even ready to run away with her. I thought maybe after a few years, once everyone calmed down, they’d understand us.”
He paused, pain flickering in his eyes. “But then, by accident, I overheard Joan on the phone with someone I didn’t recognize. She sounded furious. She said, ‘He’s dead, and you’re still asking for money? Go ask the devil for it!’”
