Lately, Brett had been all over the media, suddenly singing AI’s praises and insisting that it was going to change the game for both Duncan Corporation and the whole world. The speed of his flip-flop was honestly kind of impressive.
Brett’s face darkened at Stephen’s comment. He knew exactly what his cousin was getting at.
Brett kept his expression cool. “Things are different now. I only just realized AI is the way forward, so I updated our strategy.”
Stephen let out a dry laugh. Brett’s jaw clenched. The tension in the living room was thick enough to cut.
Right then, the TV in the background chimed in. Usually, the TV was just there for noise. George didn’t like the house too quiet, so he had the staff leave it on. But today, of all things, it was replaying the finals of the Coralbridge FinTech Competition.
On the screen, Brett looked calm and confident, talking smoothly like he was born for the spotlight. Stephen crossed his legs, propped his chin on his hand, and said, “Pretty impressive. No wonder you’ve got such a loyal fan club. Only thing is…” He let the words hang in the air. “That speech sounds awfully familiar. Did you actually write it yourself?”
Brett didn’t even blink. “Does it matter if I did or didn’t?”
The two of them looked like they were about to go at it. Right at that moment, George walked in.
Their attitude shifted instantly, both standing up. “Grandpa.”
George grinned. “What’s got you two in such a good mood?”
Good mood…
The butler standing nearby nearly rolled his eyes. If George had shown up even a minute later, these two would have been at each other’s throats.
Brett opened his mouth to explain, but Stephen beat him to it with a smile. “Oh, nothing much. The TV was just showing Brett’s big moment, so I asked who wrote the speech.”
George shook his head. “You really don’t pay attention, do you? Even I know Brett wrote it himself. He said so in a magazine interview, didn’t you, Brett?”
“Don’t accuse me of that. I’m the head of the company. You think I have to write every speech myself? It’s normal to let someone else handle that.”
“But what you did wasn’t exactly honest.”
Brett shot him a look. “And you’d know all about honesty, I suppose.”
“Enough, both of you!” George brought his cane down hard on the floor, the sound echoing through the room.
Stephen and Brett instantly fell silent. Even Cindy and Chelsey, who had been outside, hurried in to see what was going on.
George let out a heavy sigh. “We’re family. There’s no need to fight. It’s the weekend. We finally have a chance to be together. No more talk about work.”
