“A friend?” Lottie let out a laugh. “Come on, you don’t have any friends except me.”
Rebecca had always been the quiet type. Back in college, she juggled so many part-time jobs just to pay her tuition that she barely had time to eat, let alone make friends.
Later, when she started making decent money from coding gigs and got a couple of small patents under her belt, things got easier. But by then, she was dating Bruce. Her whole life started to revolve around him, so she still didn’t have time for anyone else.
Lottie knew the truth. After all these years, she was the only real friend Rebecca had.
So now, hearing Rebecca say she was here with a friend, Lottie just couldn’t buy it.
Rebecca didn’t answer the question. Instead, she shot one back. “Why are you here?”
“Work, obviously.” Lottie waved the folder in her hand with a little flourish. “I’m here to deliver something to…”
She almost blurted out ‘Sonja’ but caught herself.
“…Mr. Lamont. He’s meeting with a client.”
Bruce is here?
Rebecca froze for a split second.
“Is that so? Well, go ahead, then.” Rebecca wanted nothing to do with Bruce tonight, and she definitely didn’t want him seeing her with Cindy.
Sunforge Tech, where she worked, and NovaStack Cloud, where Bruce worked, were basically rivals. If Bruce found out she worked at Sunforge now, he’d probably make quitting way more complicated than it needed to be.
Rebecca headed for the door, but Lottie called after her. “Aren’t you going to wait for your friend?”
“I’ll wait outside,” Rebecca replied.
Lottie watched Rebecca hurry away, practically running. She couldn’t help but scoff.
Still pretending she was here with a friend. Anyone could see she was alone. What was she even doing here?
When the elevator doors slid open, Lottie nearly bumped into someone. She was about to snap, but then she saw the Hermès bag, the Cartier necklace, the brand new Chanel dress.
Only the rich or powerful came here.
Lottie knew better than to start something, so she quickly stepped aside for Cindy.
Cindy glanced around the lobby but didn’t see Rebecca. When she stepped outside, she finally spotted her standing next to a car.
“Why’d you come out?” Cindy asked.
Stephen looked satisfied. “Good.”
As Rebecca walked around the car to the passenger seat, Stephen bent down and quietly told his sister, “Don’t come to places like this.”
Cindy pouted. “You’re here all the time.”
“I’m here for work.”
Something about that didn’t sit right with Cindy. She’d been here plenty of times and he’d never said anything before. But today, with Rebecca here, he suddenly had an opinion.
She eyed him. “Do you like Rebecca?”
Stephen shot her a look. “Shut up.”
“What’s wrong with that? I think she’s great. You two would be cute together,” Cindy said, grinning like a matchmaker.
Stephen just rubbed his temples and waved her off. “Drive safe.”
He stood there watching the car until it disappeared down the street, only then letting himself look away.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
