The man at the door looked startled when he realized it wasn’t Shawn answering. Still, he kept his manners and asked, “Is Shawn home?”
Rebecca shook her head. “He had to go to the office. He might be back late.”
Disappointment flickered across the old man’s face. He nodded politely. “Alright. Sorry to bother you.”
As he turned to leave, Rebecca called after him. “Is there something you needed? Maybe I can help.”
He gave her a doubtful look, sizing her up before shaking his head. “I don’t think you can.”
“What is it?” she pressed, curious.
He sighed. “My computer caught a virus. I called a few repair guys, but none of them could fix it. I remember Shawn is pretty good with computers, so I thought maybe he could help.”
Rebecca’s fingers were already itching to try. “If you don’t mind, bring your laptop up. I’ll take a look.”
“You?” The man’s surprise was obvious. He looked like he wanted to laugh it off. Fixing computers wasn’t something he expected from a young lady like her.
But he really had no other options, and waiting for Shawn could take forever, so he tottered off to fetch his laptop.
Rebecca welcomed him inside, poured him some water, and set the laptop on her knees. Her fingers flew over the keys. In just a few minutes, she handed the computer back to him. “All done.”
The old man blinked, water barely touched. “Already?” He wasn’t sure he believed it. Was she even better than Shawn?
He typed in his password, opened his usual browser, clicked around, and realized everything was back to normal. His jaw dropped. “This is really amazing.”
He closed the laptop, now eyeing Rebecca with curiosity. “Are you Shawn’s girlfriend?”
Rebecca paused, then nodded, a little shy. “Yeah.”
A strange look flashed through the old man’s eyes, but he ended up smiling. “I always thought he was single. So he’s got such a talented girlfriend. Makes sense.”
He chuckled to himself, shaking his head.
Rebecca blinked. Makes sense? Did that mean Shawn never told anyone about her? Were they secretly dating? Was she his hidden girlfriend?
Seriously, this guy. Dating her in private while acting single in public. No wonder she argued with him.
Rebecca let out a long sigh in her mind. She felt like she was going crazy. Sometimes she thought she was being too sensitive, and other times she felt like Shawn was just impossible. Her feelings kept swinging back and forth, never settling.
What exactly were they to each other?
At nine, Shawn finally came home, rain still clinging to his coat. He stopped in the hallway when he spotted the table set with three dishes and a soup. Surprise flashed across his face.
Then worry took over. “Your leg isn’t better yet. Why’d you get up to cook? If you were hungry, you should have told me. I could have just ordered in.”
