Before he knew it, Bruce had somehow ended up parked right in front of Rebecca’s apartment building. He thought about the advice Morris had given him about making up with a girl. After a few seconds of hesitation, he picked up his phone and called Rebecca.
“Hello? Bruce?” Her voice was icy, almost distant. She was definitely still upset. Bruce had only just realized how harsh it must have sounded when he’d ended their engagement so bluntly at the hospital. If he were her, he’d be angry too.
“Are you asleep? I was thinking about coming up to check on your mom and maybe talk with you for a bit. Would that be okay?” Bruce tried to keep his tone casual.
Rebecca glanced at the clock on her wall. It was almost ten thirty. She let out a short, bitter laugh. Who comes to visit a sick family member right before bedtime? She didn’t bother to hide her annoyance. “Not a good time.”
Bruce knew she was right. Samantha was probably already asleep by now. “Okay. Can you come to the office tomorrow?”
Rebecca tightened her grip on the phone. “My vacation’s over. I was already planning to come in.”
“Alright,” Bruce said, “I have something I want to talk to you about tomorrow.”
He tossed his phone onto the console and started up the car. There was still time to make things right. He’d try again tomorrow.
The next morning, Rebecca arrived at NovaStack Cloud extra early. She wanted to get her resignation paperwork finished as soon as possible so she’d have time to stop by Sunforge Tech and work on her code. She went straight to the HR department.
“Have you guys noticed that ever since Dr. Campbell showed up, Mr. Lamont barely ever looks grumpy anymore?”
“Oh, totally. Even his outfits have changed. It’s like he’s trying to impress someone. The whole thing is just so obvious.”
“Megan, can you print out a resignation form for me? I’ll also need an employment certificate. Thanks.”
Megan stared at her in shock. “A resignation form? Rebecca, are you quitting?”
Rebecca just smiled. “It’s already been cleared with Mr. Lamont.”
Wait, Mr. Lamont agreed? Megan’s mind raced back to all the rumors swirling around the office about him and Sonja. She couldn’t help but feel a stab of sympathy for Rebecca. Men really could be jerks sometimes. You stick with them through everything, and the moment someone new shows up, they forget all about you.
Still, Megan was just an employee. If Mr. Lamont had signed off, she had no say in the matter. She printed the resignation form and handed it over. “Just fill this out and bring it to me before you leave today. I’ll get your certificate ready.”
