Rebecca propped her chin on her hand, her thoughts spinning with questions she didn’t want to answer. Could they really be hooking up in the office? The idea made her feel sick.
She didn’t want to waste another minute. Rebecca handed Penny a USB drive. “This has all the client info. I know the files were already handed over, but I made a backup just in case. Give it to Dr. Campbell when she gets in.”
Penny looked sad. “Okay, Rebecca.”
Rebecca took her signed forms to Megan, who exchanged them for an official resignation letter, stamped and final.
Megan let out a sigh. “See you around, Rebecca.”
“See you,” Rebecca replied, giving her a small, polite smile.
Rebecca had come in quietly and was leaving the same way. Most people didn’t even notice she was gone until the paperwork was finished and she was already heading downstairs.
Outside, the sky was blue and full of soft clouds, sunshine pouring down. Rebecca lifted her hand to block the glare and looked out into the distance. The world felt wide open for the first time in ages. She felt lighter than she’d ever felt before.
She was just stepping out when Kane walked in through the revolving doors, nearly bumping into her.
He looked shocked. “Ms. Harper?”
Rebecca met his eyes, her tone cool. “I’ve left the company. You don’t need to call me Ms. Harper anymore.”
Kane’s eyes went wide. “You… quit?” He couldn’t believe it. “But Mr. Lamont hasn’t agreed to this. You can’t just leave! The company needs you!”
Rebecca gently pulled her arm away. “He already approved it. And thanks for the heads-up last time, but it doesn’t matter anymore. We broke up. Goodbye, Kane.”
“Bruce, should we keep going?”
Both voices overlapped. Kane pressed his lips together. He’d wanted to mention running into Rebecca downstairs, but Bruce was already shutting the door, not interested.
Kane got the message loud and clear. Between Dr. Campbell and Rebecca, his boss had made his choice. No point saying more. He went back to his desk and buried himself in work.
As evening crept in and the office emptied out, Bruce finally remembered today was supposed to be Rebecca’s first day back. He hadn’t seen her at all. They’d agreed yesterday he had something to tell her. Why hadn’t she shown up?
He reached for his phone, then paused. She was still mad at him. And she probably already knew Sonja had joined the company.
After thinking it over, Bruce decided to go downstairs and look for Rebecca himself.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
