The car eased to a stop just a couple minutes after turning into a narrow, quiet alley. As soon as Rebecca stepped out, it hit her. “I totally forgot to buy something,” she said, cheeks burning with embarrassment.
Stephen just smiled, easy as ever. “What did you want to get?”
“A gift... you know, something for the hosts. Isn’t it rude to show up empty-handed? Is there a grocery or a little shop nearby?”
Stephen shook his head and popped open the trunk. “No need. I already bought a bunch of gifts. Pick out two, we’ll say they’re from you.”
Rebecca hesitated, wondering if that really counted. Stephen seemed to read her mind. “Trust me, my uncle doesn’t need anything. He’s my uncle, and with what I make, he’s definitely not missing out on gifts.”
She had to admit, he made a good point. She grabbed two of the boxes and gave him a grateful smile. “Thanks.”
Stephen raised an eyebrow at her. “No problem.”
Stephen knocked, and after a minute, the door opened.
Rebecca found herself face-to-face with a middle-aged lady who looked both gentle and elegant. She guessed this must be Dr. Palmer’s wife, though it was hard to connect the warmth in her eyes with the fierce stories Stephen had told her.
Liana’s face lit up. “Stephen, you made it! Come in, come in. You’re always so thoughtful, lugging all these gifts.”
Stephen slipped off his shoes and smiled. “Grandma and Grandpa asked me to bring them.”
Liana rolled her eyes, obviously not buying it. “Don’t try to sweet-talk me. Your grandparents would never ask you to do that.”
She knew her nephew’s attempts to fix things between them. Just as she turned to head back inside, her gaze landed on Rebecca. Liana’s eyes went wide with excitement.
“Oh my, Stephen, you brought your girlfriend! No wonder you wanted to come over so suddenly this morning. You wanted us to meet her!”
Rebecca’s face turned bright pink. Even Stephen, who was usually so calm, had ears that were turning red.
