The rest of the group waited in the main room. Time dragged on, so a lot of people started mingling and making small talk. A few company reps, who clearly knew something, came over to congratulate Bruce and his team even before the results were out.
“Mr. Lamont, Dr. Campbell, congrats in advance!”
“Dr. Campbell, after hearing your pitch, I’d say this contract is pretty much yours. Hope we get to work together soon!”
Bruce and Sonja exchanged a quick smile before shaking hands with everyone who came by.
Sonja kept it polite. “We haven’t officially won yet, so I don’t want to get ahead of myself.”
Bruce nodded. “Right, we’ll wait for the final announcement.”
The others jumped in, all talking at once.
“Dr. Campbell, you’re too humble. Your proposal was miles ahead of the rest. Be confident, it’s got your name written all over it!”
“Exactly, if you win, you owe us dinner!”
The room was buzzing, everyone talking over each other and full of excitement. Lottie was absolutely thrilled. If they landed this first-phase contract, the next two would be a breeze. She could practically see her bonus already.
Meanwhile, things were tense at the Sunforge Tech table. Cindy sat back, arms crossed, rolling her eyes so hard it was a wonder they didn’t get stuck. She leaned over to Rebecca and whispered, “Honestly, do people with connections have to be so obvious about it? You’d think they’d at least try to be low-key.”
Justin joined in, keeping his voice down. “Yeah, look at them, all smug. They really shouldn’t pop the champagne too soon.”
Rebecca just shrugged it off with a smile. “Whatever. This project is almost guaranteed to go to NovaStack Cloud anyway.”
