Though Madelyn had temporarily accepted Irene’s explanation, a shadow of doubt lingered in her heart.
The uncertainty kept her awake all night, and within just two days, dark circles had formed under her eyes. When Khloe saw her daughter-in-law in such a state, she was taken aback.
Frowning in displeasure, she snapped, “Arnold isn’t even home these days—what could possibly be keeping you so busy? Look at the state you’re in! If Old Mr. Stone and Madam see you like this, they’ll surely find fault with our family. Can’t you at least pretend to be sensible? Truly, coming from a modest background, you lack any sense of refinement.”
As the saying goes, mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law are natural adversaries, and Khloe was no exception.
She had never thought much of Beverly before, and Madelyn was even worse in her eyes. In her opinion, a woman of Madelyn’s standing was utterly unworthy of her son.
Bearing the sting of her mother-in-law’s sharp words, Madelyn remained silent and walked straight out of the villa.
Being ignored only fueled Khloe’s anger.
“What do you think you’re doing?” she fumed. “Throwing a tantrum? This is the Stone family, not the Olson family. Have you no manners at all?”
Madelyn halted in her tracks. Slowly, she turned her head and met Khloe’s gaze with icy calm. “If you dislike me as your daughter-in-law so much, Mother, you can always tell your son to divorce me. I won’t object in the slightest.”
“You—” Khloe was momentarily stunned, her fingers trembling with rage.
She had spent her entire life asserting dominance.
Even in front of Aster, she had never been at a disadvantage. Yet in her later years, she found herself constantly outmaneuvered by Jolene, a woman she had always looked down upon. Already in a foul mood, she now had to endure her daughter-in-law’s defiance. It was infuriating.
But she couldn’t just demand a divorce.
Although the Olson family couldn't compare to the Stone family's stature, they still commanded considerable influence as a major corporation.
Her son still needed the Olson family's backing, so even though her face flushed with anger, she bit back the word "divorce" that Madelyn had practically dared her to say.
Madelyn let out a mocking laugh, her eyes brimming with undisguised contempt. Without another glance, she turned and walked away.
That look alone was enough to make Khloe explode. Just then, Arnold's father descended the stairs, and the fuming Khloe immediately seized the chance to complain, "Just look at your daughter-in-law! Does she have any manners at all? Does she really think popping out a grandson means we have to treat her like royalty?"
Her husband cast her a calm, sidelong glance. "Enough. Stop picking on her all the time—unless you want Mother to hear about it and get upset."
Lately, the old matriarch, perhaps due to her age, couldn't stand the slightest hint of discord in the Stone Family household.
Khloe instantly fell silent, though resentment still simmered inside her. But what could she do? She could only stew in silent frustration, waiting for her son to return so she could tell him exactly how disrespectful his wife had been to her own mother-in-law!
...
After leaving the Stone Family residence, Madelyn drove straight to an upscale Western restaurant.
The place was exorbitantly priced, its decor refined and elegant. Perhaps because the young heirs of wealthy families considered such venues the only ones worthy of their status, it had gradually become an unspoken gathering spot for high society.
When Madelyn arrived, she found her guest already waiting. Pressing her lips into a thin line, she clenched her jaw and strode forward.
The person she had arranged to meet was none other than Ariana.
Ariana had been staying at the Stone Family residence most of the time lately.
