"Cozying up?" Madelyn curled her lip in self-mockery. "So this is what you think of me."
Irene panicked immediately. She couldn't afford to lose this friend right now, so she quickly said, "Sorry, Madelyn, I got a little carried away. You know I'm in this mess because of Ariana. Seeing you alone with her, of course, I got anxious... Madelyn, you're still on my side, right? You haven't betrayed me, have you?"
Madelyn looked at Irene, her face pale but eyes filled with hope.
She remained silent for a long time, roughly a minute passed before Madelyn finally spoke, her voice slightly hoarse, "Would you forgive a friend who stabbed you in the back? If you can forgive, then I can too."
Irene's face turned even paler. She asked, "What do you mean by that?"
Madelyn replied, "You know better than I do, don't you?"
Irene couldn't hold back any longer and exploded, sneering, "Ha, talking about forgiveness? Isn't it just that you've seen my downfall and want to find a reason for yourself? Madelyn, I never thought my long-time friend would be like this. I guess I was blind. If you want to leave, go ahead. Let's just pretend these years of friendship never existed."
Listening to Irene's words, filled with heartbreak and sadness, Madelyn's face showed no emotion. She said, "If that's how you want to see it, then so be it."
With that, Madelyn opened the car door.
Before getting in, Madelyn paused and said softly, "Irene, there's something I've kept to myself and never asked you, never even thought about. But now, I want to ask. I understand you hate Ariana, and I understand you wanting to hurt her and her child. But when you did those things, did you ever think that my child and I were also in the hospital then?"
This had been a knot in Madelyn's heart since the fire.
She didn't dare to dwell on it.
Because she understood what the result would be if she did.
She didn't want to admit that her long-time friend never truly saw her as a true confidante, perhaps not even as a friend at all. If that were true, it would make her seem utterly ridiculous.
Irene was stunned.
She stood there in a daze, not speaking. Her eyes were slightly flustered, as if she wanted to explain something, but didn't know where to start.
Madelyn looked at Irene's expression and couldn't help but laugh.
Her laugh was tinged with a bit of sadness: "From now on, let's not meet again. Take care of yourself." With that final, casual remark, Madelyn closed the car door and started the engine. Irene, with a face as pale as a ghost, watched Madelyn's car drive away, leaving nothing but a trail of dust.
...
Ariana didn't go home directly; instead, she went to the company.
Since she became pregnant, Ariana hadn't been managing the Lamari Group. And with Stefan away, Lambert had to shuttle between both ends.
If it weren't for the fact that Lamari Group was Lambert's early labor of love, holding a different place in his heart than Stone Corporation, he would've long wanted to merge the two groups. It's just too exhausting...
Ariana rarely went to Stone Corporation.
However, the recent scandal instantly catapulted Stone Corporation to the top of entertainment news.
