"It's fine, I don't have anything else to do right now anyway."
Since he had said that, Kiara couldn’t very well insist otherwise. She quietly settled in to wait for Ariana with him.
At the dining table, Kiara ate slowly and deliberately, making a conscious effort to display proper table manners. Thankfully, after being recognized by the White family, she had taken the time to learn dining etiquette—otherwise, she would have been utterly embarrassed now. The breakfast spread wasn’t extravagant, but it was refined: delicate soup dumplings and a bowl of soft, subtly sweet congee.
Kiara had no idea how the congee was prepared, but it was exceptionally delicious. As for the dumplings—they were so exquisite they made her eyes narrow with pure pleasure.
Rawls, for his part, had a mixed heritage, with half of his ancestry tracing back to the East. Thus, he was not only accustomed to such meals but genuinely enjoyed them.
His gaze drifted over Kiara several times, a faint, unreadable light flickering in his eyes. His assistant had already compiled a full report on her, and it turned out she truly had stumbled upon him by chance that day and rescued him. His own act of saving her had been equally coincidental—neither encounter was part of any deliberate scheme.
What intrigued him, however, was her identity: she was the younger sister of the wife of the current CEO of Stone Enterprises, a major corporation in Z Country. Rawls had always held a certain fondness for Z Country. And since profit knew no borders, he had long sought to penetrate its market, which had led him to study its people closely. In most other countries, such a connection would carry little weight—overseas, professional and personal lives were strictly separated, and familial bonds weren’t nearly as binding as they were in Z Country. Take education, for example: parents were considered to have fulfilled their duty once their children reached adulthood. From that point on, they typically didn’t interfere, nor were children expected to support their parents in old age. Likewise, parents had the right to distribute their assets as they saw fit, unlike in Z Country, where wealth was almost expected to pass directly to the next generation.
If that was how things stood even between parents and children, then the sister of one’s wife would hardly be considered a significant connection abroad. But in Z Country, such familial ties were treated with considerable importance—it was partly why arranged marriages and strategic alliances remained so prevalent there. So, unexpectedly, this young woman’s status turned out to be slightly more advantageous than he had initially assumed.
The Stone Corporation was a name Rawls knew well, having collaborated with them two years ago.
Now, by chance, he had rescued this girl—a turn of events that unexpectedly offered him another opportunity to reconnect with Stone Corp. It was the kind of opening that stirred new ambitions in Rawls. Within his own family, the struggle for power was growing increasingly fierce. Not only was his own younger brother vying for control, but even his father’s adopted son was watching like a hawk, waiting for any sign of weakness. Their father valued ability far more than bloodline; in his eyes, the most capable contender would ultimately claim victory.
So, when Kiara quite literally fell into his lap, it felt like a gift—a potential new path forward. Perhaps he could leverage this connection to draw closer to the Stone family. Even though Stone Corp wasn’t based in M Country, who said distant water couldn’t quench a thirst close at hand?
Kiara, of course, had no idea what Rawls was thinking. She continued to happily savor the rare and exquisite meal before her. Unsure whether the custom of “no talking during meals” applied abroad, she remained quiet throughout. It wasn’t until Rawls broke the silence that she looked up.
“Miss White, your sister is coming in person to pick you up. It seems the bond between you two must be quite strong?”
Kiara was momentarily taken aback, not expecting the question. She blinked, processing his words before nodding with a polite smile. “Yes, my sister and I are very close.”
Rawls gave a light chuckle. “That’s truly something to envy.”
Kiara quite liked hearing that—she felt the same way. In her heart, the luckiest moment of her life had been the day she met Ariana at the bar. And now, that remarkable woman was her sister. Before all this, Kiara wouldn’t have dared to dream of such a bond.
But ingrained humility, so characteristic of people from Z Country, kept her from boasting. Instead, she smiled playfully and said, “Well, that’s just how things are between siblings, isn’t it?”
A shadow of melancholy flickered briefly in Rawls’ eyes. “Unfortunately, I haven’t been as fortunate as you, Miss White.”
Kiara sensed something unspoken in his tone, though she couldn’t quite grasp what it was. She assumed perhaps something had happened to his siblings, and the topic had touched a sore spot. Quickly, she offered, “I’m sorry…”
Rawls shook his head gently, a wry smile forming. “Why apologize? I was merely expressing my admiration for the relationship you share with your sister.”
