After the farce concluded, Ariana and Lambert returned to the villa. Perhaps stirred by a pang of sympathy, Ariana noticed how Lambert had whisked her away without a second glance at the boy left standing alone and ignored in the grand hall. A wave of compassion washed over her.
So, she invited him to come along.
Jaxson glanced up at Ariana, then silently acquiesced, following her and Lambert without a word.
Tsk...
Lambert let out a soft, dismissive sound but said nothing more.
It wasn't until they were outside the main residence that Lambert turned his head slightly toward Jaxson. "Starting tomorrow, you'll attend school and work part-time at the Stone Corporation. Do you plan to live at the Stone Estate or find your own place?"
"Stone Estate," Jaxson replied flatly.
Lambert didn't seem the least bit surprised by his answer. He gave a curt nod. "Very well. You'll stay in the guest room at my and Ariana's villa for now. Once the housekeeper has prepared a room in the main wing, you can move there."
"Mm," Jaxson acknowledged with a nod.
With that, Lambert dismissed him from his attention and ascended the stairs with Ariana toward their bedroom.
Despite their long absence, the room was impeccably clean and tidy, as if awaiting their return.
Ariana sat down, her eyes lifting to meet Lambert's. She held back for a moment but couldn't contain her curiosity any longer. "Are you planning to mentor that boy?" she asked, a faint, questioning tone in her voice. It wasn't that she was overly suspicious; it was just that her husband didn't strike her as the charitable type.
After so many years of marriage, if she still didn't understand Lambert's character, she would have failed as his wife.
She knew him all too well.
Lambert had never been one for acts of kindness.
Helping that illegitimate son return to the Stone family was merely a strategic move—a way to strike a fatal blow against the main branch and undermine Arnold. As for how Jaxson would fare afterward, that was hardly Lambert’s concern. She was certain he hadn’t given a single thought to helping the boy establish a foothold in the Stone family.
The thought made Ariana sympathize with the young man even more.
Perhaps it was the image of him standing alone that struck a chord in her. Once, she had been like that too—utterly isolated, fighting her battles alone in a hostile environment. Everyone had been her enemy, mocking and belittling her.
And now, Jaxson’s situation seemed no less dire than hers had been back then.
Lambert didn’t like hearing Ariana mention another man. A shadow of displeasure crossed his face as he leaned slightly forward, locking eyes with her before blinking slowly. “Why should I help him? Whether he stands firm in the Stone family is his own problem.”
Just as Ariana had guessed, his reply was delivered with icy detachment.
She sighed inwardly, feeling a headache coming on.
But Lambert seemed to read her mind. A faint, almost helpless smile tugged at his lips as he said, “Enough, don’t worry about him. He’s not the pitiable soul you imagine.” That boy’s cunning ran deep—so deep that even Lambert felt a flicker of unease.
His instincts told him Jaxson was anything but simple.
Especially those eyes—cold and detached, utterly unlike those of a boy his age.
