“Do you really think I’m stupid?” Kiara’s voice was icy. “I may not be the sharpest, but I know exactly who treats me well and who doesn’t. I have no idea what you’re trying to pull with this call, but let me make one thing clear: if you’re planning to use me against anyone, you’re wasting your time.”
Children who grew up in orphanages, regardless of intelligence, often developed a keen sensitivity—especially toward how others treated them. Kiara could feel the genuine care from her uncle and Ariana. In contrast, from the very first meeting with her biological sister, she had sensed dislike and rejection. Perhaps because of her orphanage upbringing, Kiara longed for a family more than anyone and cherished the one she had found. So if Jane thought she could drive a wedge between them, she was sorely mistaken. No matter what happened, Kiara would never betray her uncle or Ariana.
Jane fell silent. She had prepared a whole script to deceive her seemingly naive younger sister, but now the words stuck in her throat. A long, heavy pause hung between them, until an indescribable jealousy surged in Jane’s chest. She tried to suppress it, forcing out a cold laugh. “Oh? You’re loyal to Ariana, but is she really sincere with you? Do you honestly believe she cares? She only brought you back to undermine me.”
Kiara’s expression remained unflinching. “Whatever her reasons, at least I’ve gained more from it than you have.”
“You—!” The remark struck a nerve. Jane’s tone sharpened, laced with anger and resentment—directed squarely at Kiara. Yes, she loathed Ariana, but she despised this sister who had stolen everything from her even more.
A faint, mocking smile touched Kiara’s lips. “Done pretending?”
Jane went quiet again. After a long while, she let out a sudden, bitter laugh. “Tsk. It seems my dear little sister has learned a thing or two lately—you’ve become quite sharp-tongued. Fine, have it your way. I just wanted to remind you that in this world, your closest ties are with family. I am your only sister. I won’t deny that I detest you—I always have. But you’re still my sister. Even if I don’t like you, I won’t stand by and let others bully you. I know you probably don’t believe me, and that’s your choice. But mark my words: Ariana is ruthless. I’ve said what I needed to say. What you do from here is up to you. As your sister, I’ve done my part. If our parents are watching from above, they’ll understand. I have nothing more to say.”
The long, rambling speech carried a bitterness Jane had never expressed before.
It sounded as if it were laced with a helplessness she couldn’t put into words. Kiara’s heart wavered slightly, but only for a moment before she regained her composure.
Instead of pressing further, Jane sighed and said, “If anything comes up in the future, just call this number. I know you don’t want to talk to me, and I’ve said all I needed to say. There’s nothing more to add. That’s it then—take care of yourself from now on.”
Kiara’s eyes flickered with emotion, but in the end, she hung up the phone.
Just as Kiara was lost in thought, her expression troubled, a knock sounded at her bedroom door.
The butler’s voice came from outside: “Miss, Sir requests your presence for dinner downstairs.”
“Alright, I’ll be right there,” Kiara replied promptly. With that, she pushed the matter to the back of her mind, casually set her phone aside, and headed downstairs.
Downstairs, Gilbert was reading the newspaper. When he noticed Kiara approaching, a gentle, affectionate smile touched his eyes. “Kiara, have you been tired lately at the company?” Ariana had only been spending half-days at the office recently, using the rest of her time to handle other matters.
