"It's pretty much settled," Lambert muttered vaguely.
Truth be told, he wasn’t entirely sure himself. He had left the arrangements to Assistant Hills, but Assistant Hills shouldn’t mess this up—unless he wanted to lose his job.
Lambert felt not a shred of guilt for treating Assistant Hills like an all-purpose caretaker.
Ariana eyed him skeptically. "Really?"
Lambert nodded. "Of course. Would I neglect the arrangements for my own daughter’s hundred-day celebration? Anyway, stop overthinking it. Are you tired? If so, rest early. Tomorrow, we’re going back to the main villa."
"Back to the main villa? What’s happened?"
Lambert wouldn’t suggest returning out of the blue without reason.
"Grandmother’s health has taken a turn. Something’s not right, so we need to check on her," he replied tersely.
"Grandmother?"
Ariana froze. She hadn’t expected this—Grandmother had always been in robust health. She knew better than anyone that the old woman was far hardier than she appeared, even more so than Grandfather, despite his outwardly vigorous demeanor. And with her cheerful, easygoing temperament...
It wasn’t like her to fall ill so suddenly.
Even at her advanced age.
A pang of worry struck Ariana. In the entire Stone household, aside from her mother-in-law, Grandmother had been the only one who truly treated her well.
Lambert noticed her confusion. The corner of his lips curled into a faint, mocking smile as he said coolly, "It’s all thanks to that bold little maid. Remember her?"
Ariana frowned. "What happened to her?"
That girl had been far too cunning. Ariana had already instructed the butler to deal with her once her younger son returned.
Could it be that she hadn’t left after all?
Lambert set down his pen and let out a cold chuckle. "At some point, she ended up with Arnold. Wasn’t Arnold already cast out by the Stone family? But who would’ve thought she’d gotten pregnant with his child? Once Arnold’s mother found out, she became desperate to keep the baby." And that was what had made her furious enough to fall ill.
Even without Lambert spelling it out, Ariana could easily guess the rest.
Her expression darkened instantly.
It seemed she had indeed underestimated that girl, Sheryl. Perhaps, if she hadn’t been vigilant back then, Sheryl might have set her sights on someone else—someone like Lambert? Though she trusted that even if Sheryl had thrown herself at him, Lambert would never have taken the bait. Still, dealing with such a situation would have been troublesome.
Ariana exhaled quietly in relief.
She felt a little guilty toward Madelyn, but she couldn’t help but feel relieved.
As for why the elder aunt wanted to keep the child, the answer was simple. First, she genuinely couldn’t bear to part with her unborn grandchild. Second, she was feeling threatened. Ever since Jaxson had been recognized and brought back into the Stone family, the household had been anything but peaceful.
Even though Ariana rarely returned to the estate...
Whenever she did, she could sense the undercurrents of silent tension.
"Be careful when you go back tomorrow. Some people, once they’re pushed to the edge, are capable of anything," Lambert said, a trace of icy sharpness flashing in his gaze.
Yes, when it came down to it, Arnold had been expelled from the Stone family because of Lambert.
But Lambert feared no retaliation.
