Rebecca couldn’t help frowning. An evening gown? That was uncharted territory for her.
“Come on, let’s go shopping after work. You can thank me by buying dinner,” Cindy said, grinning.
Rebecca just stared at her, speechless. Somehow, Cindy had managed to turn a simple favor into a free meal.
They ended up at a high-end studio that looked straight out of a magazine. The manager greeted them like they were royalty and led them to a plush private room. Clearly, Cindy was a VIP here. The manager handed her a glossy catalog with a smile. “Ms. Duncan, is there anything special you’re looking for? Our latest designs are all in here. Just let me know what you like and I’ll bring them in.”
“It’s not for me. It’s for my friend,” Cindy said, nodding toward Rebecca.
The manager looked a bit surprised, probably because Rebecca didn’t look like the usual clientele, but she just seemed excited to have another big spender in the store.
Rebecca flipped through a few pages, feeling more and more out of place. She leaned over to whisper, “These are way out of my budget. Can we go somewhere else?”
Cindy shot her a look that said relax. “Pick whatever you want. My brother’s paying.”
“Is that really okay?”
“You’re going to his business event. He should cover it.”
Something about Cindy’s logic was hard to argue with. Rebecca ended up picking a few dresses that were modest and not too pricey, at least by the store’s standards.
While they waited for the manager to bring the gowns, voices drifted in from outside.
“Mr. Lamont, Ms. Campbell, please have a seat. Your items are ready. We’ll have them wrapped for you right away.”
Rebecca tensed, but her face gave nothing away. Cindy, on the other hand, practically rolled her eyes out of her head.
Cindy squeezed her hand. “Come on, try these on. Don’t bother worrying about my brother’s wallet. He couldn’t spend all his money if he tried.”
Rebecca forced a smile. “Alright.”
In the end, she picked a simple, classic gown. As they left, Cindy kept grumbling.
“You have such a killer body. That backless dress was perfect for you.”
“I’m going for work, not a beauty contest,” Rebecca replied.
“Whatever. Your ex must be blind. Just wait. One day he’ll come crawling back, begging for another chance,” Cindy said, hooking their arms together.
Rebecca looked down, her tone gentle. “He won’t. And honestly, I couldn’t care less if he did.” The best relationship she could imagine with Bruce was one where he didn’t exist at all.
