Someone finally spoke up in the group chat, typing, “I want to sign up. Greg, is that okay?”
Greg shot him a look, then slammed his reply into the keyboard. “Do whatever you want. Whoever wants to go, just go. You don’t need my permission.” He wasn’t about to waste time on traitors.
With Greg’s answer, the guy happily hurried off. Greg took a deep breath and scanned the room. The rest of his team had their heads down, working like nothing happened. He relaxed a little. At least his effort training them hadn’t gone to waste.
He wasn’t fooled by Rebecca’s little games. Only the delivery team would fall for her tricks, chasing after a bit of extra cash. His R&D crew had standards. No way would they sell out for pocket change.
Greg turned back to his computer, ready to dive into code, when suddenly two engineers across from him got up. They shot him an apologetic grin, scratched their heads, then practically jogged over to Justin’s desk.
Greg could feel his blood pressure spike. His face was turning red. And it didn’t stop there. In the next few minutes, four or five more people joined them. Greg felt like he could explode.
At least, he told himself, they were all junior staff. His key people, the ones he really relied on, were still at their desks, typing away. Rebecca could have the small fry. His top team wasn’t going anywhere.
The office finally quieted down. Greg tried to refocus, opening his code editor again. He barely managed to type out two lines when the man beside him suddenly stood up.
It was Bob. His team lead, his right-hand man. He’d personally brought him over to Sunforge Tech.
Greg’s jaw clenched. He glared at Bob. “You…”
Bob looked away, his shoulders slumped. “Sorry, Greg. I don’t have a choice. You know I just bought a house and a car.” He couldn’t meet Greg’s eyes as he shuffled over to Justin, mumbling, “I want to sign up, too.”
Justin was surprised, but he kept his face calm. “All done.”
“Oh, are you free tomorrow night? There’s a business dinner. I hope you could come with me.”
Rebecca nodded. “Sure. No problem.”
On her way back downstairs, she almost bumped into Cindy. They started chatting about the business dinner. Cindy gave Rebecca a once-over, eyes wide in disbelief. “Wait, you’re not planning to wear that, are you?”
Rebecca glanced down at her own outfit. “What’s wrong with it? Doesn’t it look fine?” She always wore suits to work. They weren’t high-end designer, but they were from good brands and looked professional enough.
“No way!” Cindy made a quick cross over her chest. “It’s not about whether it looks good. For a business dinner, you have to wear a cocktail dress.”
