Before Sonja could say a word, Bruce casually dropped the name of a design studio.
Morris lifted an eyebrow. "You took Sonja shopping?"
"Yeah."
"So, how much was it?"
"Six hundred eighty thousand."
Morris looked like he was about to swallow his tongue. "Six hundred eighty thousand? Seriously?"
Hearing the number, Paul glanced over at Sonja, his brow creasing. Morris leaned in, whispering, "I can see she's Bruce's one true love. He just drops almost seven hundred grand on a dress for her. If it were Rebecca, Bruce wouldn't even spend sixty-eight hundred."
Paul shot Morris a look, voice sharp. "Do you ever stop talking?"
Right then, a waiter passed by. Paul snatched a glass of champagne and drifted to the edge of the crowd, his eyes finding Rebecca across the room.
She looked incredible tonight. Absolutely gorgeous. She didn’t need a six hundred eighty thousand dollar dress to be the most beautiful woman here.
Soon, the party shifted gears. The host finished his speech and soft music floated down from the ceiling. Some guests stuck to the sides, sipping champagne and chatting politely about business. The younger crowd was all energy, pouring onto the dance floor, inviting strangers to dance.
Every girl in the room kept sneaking glances at Stephen. With no one by his side, a line of women took turns, blushing and hopeful, asking him to dance. He turned every single one down.
Sonja arched an eyebrow. Before Bruce or the others could react, she glided right up to Stephen.
"Mr. Duncan, would you honor me with a dance?" she asked, lifting her delicate, pale hand, a playful smile in her eyes as she looked at him.
No one had anything to say after that. They just lifted their dresses and went off to find someone else to dance with.
Across the room, Sonja’s lips curled into a smirk. She lifted her chin and caught Rebecca’s eye, giving her a look that was almost daring.
Rebecca looked away quickly, focusing instead on the tall man with the broad shoulders. Even if he already knew Sonja had bought her degree and her thesis, he would still be swayed by her, wouldn’t he? Men always seemed to fall for girls who were bright, bold, and beautiful.
Rebecca lowered her eyes, pressed her lips together, and wandered over to the food table for comfort. At least there was something sweet to eat.
She picked up a ham sandwich. When she turned back, she noticed a slice of cheesecake had appeared on her plate.
"I know you like this," someone said.
Rebecca frowned, moved the cake off her plate, and looked up to find Bruce standing there.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
