"Mr. Lamont, I don’t like sweets, so stop acting like you know me."
Bruce took a deep breath, trying to hold himself together. Every time she called him Mr. Lamont, it was like another wall going up between them. He missed the way she used to be, the way she used to look at him with warmth instead of this cold distance.
There was a side door near the buffet table that led out to the garden. As soon as Rebecca finished her sandwich, she set her plate down and slipped outside. The air inside felt too heavy, too crowded. She just wanted a little space to breathe.
Bruce followed after her, but Rebecca barely glanced his way. She walked slowly through the garden, acting as if he wasn’t even there, her eyes lifted to the sky. Tonight really was beautiful. Stars scattered everywhere, and the crescent moon hung low, gentle and bright. She crossed her arms and tilted her head back to take it all in.
Bruce’s voice broke the quiet. It was low and a little rough, like he was struggling to find the right words. "Do you remember when we saw that meteor shower together for the first time?"
Rebecca stilled. Of course she remembered.
It was their junior year of college. She had just finished a late shift at her part time job and, on a whim, texted Bruce to see if he wanted to watch the meteor shower with her. For weeks, everyone on campus had been talking about it, saying if you watched it with someone you loved, you’d be together forever.
She honestly thought he’d say no, but he just nodded and said sure.
They took the bus out to the back hill behind campus. When they got there, the place was packed with tents, couples everywhere, some making out, some giggling under shared blankets. Rebecca’s face was burning, and she felt so out of place. Bruce, though, looked completely calm, like none of it bothered him at all.
She started to wonder if maybe he really didn’t see her that way. Maybe she was just a friend to him, nothing more.
They waited until nine, and then, all at once, everyone around them gasped as the first shooting star streaked across the sky. Rebecca squeezed her eyes shut and made a wish. When she opened them again, Bruce was right there, closer than she expected, his face soft in the moonlight.
He was the first to speak. "What did you wish for?"
"I..." Rebecca hesitated, her eyes darting away. "It’s nothing. Doesn’t matter."
It was just a silly wish anyway.
Bruce swallowed, his voice a little shaky. "Yes."
She blinked at him, confused. "Yes what?"
A blush crept up his cheeks. "Didn’t you wish to be my girlfriend? I’m saying yes."
And just like that, they became a couple.
