As he headed back to his desk with his mug, he happened to walk past the reception area.
He glanced over and noticed a letter sitting on the front desk, addressed to Rebecca.
The sender caught his eye.
The Labor Dispute Arbitration Committee.
Greg’s eyes lit up. He quickly checked that no one was around, slipped away from the security camera, and snatched the letter.
He ducked into the stairwell before daring to open it.
Inside was a mediation notice.
Typical, he thought. He always knew there was something off about Rebecca. She actually had the guts to come work at Sunforge Tech even though she still had a non-compete with NovaStack Cloud.
He held onto the letter, ready to run upstairs and tell Mr. Duncan everything. But then he paused.
If he told Mr. Duncan now, he would definitely confront Rebecca. That would be basically warning her in advance.
No, this time he wanted her gone for good.
Greg’s eyes narrowed. He tore the letter into tiny pieces and tossed them in the trash.
Without the mediation notice, she couldn’t respond. The other side would lose patience, drop mediation, and file a lawsuit instead.
With Rebecca failing to reply, the arbitration board would see her in a bad light and probably side with NovaStack Cloud.
Sorry, Rebecca. You’re finished.
Back in the office, Greg almost bumped into Rebecca as she came out of the meeting room.
He stiffened up and forced a smile. “Hi, Ms. Harper.”
Rebecca didn’t notice anything strange and kept walking.
Watching Greg disappear, Justin rubbed his nose. “He’s suddenly so nice. Definitely up to no good. You might want to be careful.”
Justin’s words reminded Rebecca of what Cindy had whispered to her during their last business trip. That “coincidence” of two companies visiting the same client at the same time. It just didn’t add up.
Friday rolled around. It had been a week since the mediation notice had supposedly been delivered.
Rebecca was at her desk when her phone rang.
“Rebecca?” The voice on the other end was sharp and impatient. “Why haven’t you responded to the mediation notice we sent you? Didn’t you see it says you need to reply within seven days?”
As soon as she heard the words “mediation notice,” Rebecca knew who was calling.
She steadied her voice. “I’m sorry, ma’am. I never received a mediation notice. Are you sure you have the right address?”
“Of course. Isn’t your company at...”
Rebecca took a deep breath. “Yes, that’s correct.”
“Then there’s no mistake. I checked the delivery records. It says you signed for it yourself a week ago.”
Rebecca pressed her fingers to her forehead. The delivery guy must have just left it at the front desk without telling her.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
