Caleb couldn't help but feel a rush of excitement. As he got closer to the library entrance, a luxury car parked across the street caught his eye. It’s a Mercedes. There was a man leaning against the hood, a cigarette dangling from his fingers. Smoke curled around his face, making it hard to see his expression. Still, Caleb recognized him right away. He’s Judy’s cousin.

What was he doing here at this hour? Caleb glanced up at the third floor window of the library. He remembered running into Paul and Rebecca together before. As a guy, Caleb could tell what Paul was thinking. That little spark of interest in Rebecca was obvious.

He kept walking. Suddenly, Paul’s gaze locked onto his. They stared at each other for a second. Paul gave a nod as a greeting. Caleb stopped, nodded back. They had the manners down, but there was an obvious distance between them. It was that instinctive wariness guys have when they’re sizing each other up.

On the third floor, Caleb spotted Rebecca right away. Judy, who was supposed to be sitting across from her, had disappeared. Caleb grabbed a chair and sat down next to Rebecca.

She looked up, her face brightening. “You’re here! Is Dr. Palmer’s project finally done?”

“Yeah, it’s all sorted.” Caleb smiled. “Which problems are giving you trouble?”

“Just this one,” Rebecca said, sliding her notebook over.

Caleb grinned. “Getting stuck on fewer and fewer problems. Looks like you’ve got this written exam in the bag.”

He leaned in, walking her through the question. Rebecca caught on quickly, then worked through the problem herself from start to finish, making sure everything made sense before she put down her pen. She stretched and then, as if she just remembered something, turned to Caleb.

“Hey, why did you tell Judy we already have plans for Christmas?”

Caleb froze, cheeks flushing red. He hadn’t even had a chance to talk to Rebecca about it yet, and Judy had already gone and let it slip. He could’ve groaned.
