"Lottie, can we please talk about this?" Samantha tried to pull Lottie back, her voice gentle.
Lottie barely heard her. All she could think about was the look Sonja gave her earlier, that sharp disappointment in her eyes. Losing the arbitration had been bad enough, but knowing Sonja blamed her made it a thousand times worse. Even if Sonja hadn’t said it out loud, Lottie could feel the distance between them now. Their relationship, which had just started to feel real, suddenly felt fragile.
Sonja thought Lottie had kept documents from her on purpose, like she’d sabotaged the whole case. It wasn’t true. Lottie wanted to scream that she honestly didn’t know a thing about it.
She remembered Rebecca’s bedroom door was always locked before her trip. But the day Rebecca left, the lock was off. Wide open. It was a setup. Rebecca did it on purpose. She wanted Lottie to take the bait.
Lottie was furious. She hated Rebecca for this, but there was nothing she could do except try to fix things. All day, she’d played messenger, collecting every rumor at work and reporting it to Sonja, trying to make herself useful. None of it helped. That afternoon, Sonja barely spoke to her, and she didn’t even touch the coffee Lottie brought.
This was all Rebecca’s fault!
So after work, Lottie didn’t even think. She just went straight to the Harper house, storming through the door.
“Rebecca, you total bitch, you set me up!” Lottie shoved past Samantha, who stumbled and fell to the floor.
Lottie froze, guilt flickering for a second. “Mom, I didn’t mean—” She didn’t even get to finish before Rebecca slapped her, once on each cheek. The sound cracked through the air. Lottie’s head spun. Her face stung, hot and swollen.
Rebecca bent down to help Samantha up, then shot Lottie an icy glare that made her shrink back. “Those were for your own good. If you still don’t get it, I can teach you some lesson again.”
She rolled up her sleeves, looking ready for round two. Lottie’s bravado vanished. She dropped her head, silent and small, not daring to talk back.
Samantha, still shaken, sat on the sofa and clutched her chest. “You’re sisters. Why can’t you just talk this out?”

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
