Rebecca followed the GPS all the way to the party. The Larson family had money to burn and absolutely adored the only girl in their generation, so Judy’s birthday was a major event. They had rented out the entire hotel just for her.

As soon as Rebecca stepped up to the entrance, she knew she was out of her element. She looked down at her outfit, suddenly hyper-aware of how plain she looked compared to the glamorous crowd inside. The decision was easy. She’d give Judy her gift, say happy birthday, and leave as quickly as possible.

Inside, the ballroom stretched out in front of her, huge and full of people. Rebecca scanned the room but couldn’t spot Judy anywhere. She was just reaching for her phone to call when a low, familiar voice spoke up behind her.

“Rebecca?”

She turned to see Paul. She nodded a little in greeting.

Paul noticed the gift box in her hand and guessed why she was here. He offered her a gentle smile. “You’ve got exams coming up, right? Sorry Judy dragged you out at a time like this.”

“It’s fine,” Rebecca said, shaking her head. Honestly, she’d needed the break anyway.

“Where’s Judy? I just want to drop this off,” she asked, looking up at him.

Paul motioned for her to follow. “She’s upstairs in the dressing room. I’ll take you.”

“Thanks.”

Paul smiled, but there was something a little sad about it. She was always so formal with him.

Upstairs, Judy was getting her makeup done. The second she saw Rebecca’s reflection in the mirror, she waved the makeup artist away.

“Rebecca, here you are!”

Rebecca grinned and handed over the gift. “Happy birthday.”

Judy’s eyes lit up. “You’re the best, thank you!” She pulled Rebecca into a tight hug. If she hadn’t just had her lipstick done, she probably would have kissed her, too.

Paul stood by the door, watching the two of them with a warm smile and his hand resting loosely in his pocket.
