Morris didn’t know what to say. He let out a heavy sigh and reached for Bruce’s phone. “Let me call her from your phone.”
Bruce shook his head. “Don’t bother. She blocked me.”
Morris blinked. “Seriously?”
Bruce just looked away.
“Alright, I’ll use mine.” Morris pulled out his own phone, punched in Rebecca’s number, and waited. After a couple of rings, there was a confused, “Hello?” on the other end.
Morris put it on speaker and handed it to Bruce. “Go ahead.”
Bruce swallowed hard. “Rebecca…”
Instantly, the call cut off.
Morris stared at his phone in disbelief. “When did she get this kind of attitude?”
He tried calling again, refusing to give up, but this time, all he got was the same automated voice telling him the number couldn’t be reached.
Morris cursed under his breath. “Great. She blocked me too?”
He turned to Paul. “Your turn.”
Paul stood by the bed, silent for a long moment. Finally, he said, “Even if I get through, do you really think she’d come? She’s done.”
He looked down at Bruce, who just stared at the ceiling.
“Bruce, you two are over. If you need help, ask Sonja. It’s time to let Rebecca go.”
Bruce’s face was blank, lost.
Morris had to agree. He’d never been Rebecca’s biggest fan, but now that she and Bruce were really done, there was no point dragging her back into this mess. He called Sonja instead.
Half an hour later, Sonja rushed in. Now that she’d come to look after Bruce, Morris and Paul quietly slipped out and left them alone.
Outside, the wind was sharp and cold, tugging at Morris’s coat. The sky was dark, with just a few stars peeking through.
