“It’s okay, Sonja. Take care from now on.”

As soon as she hung up, Sonja let out a soft, mocking laugh.

Shawn took a slow drag on his cigarette, watching her with a lazy gaze. “Who’s Scott?”

Sonja drew in a breath and shot him a warning look. “Don’t pry into my business.”

Shawn just shrugged. He pulled a cigarette from the pack, lit it, and offered it to her.

“I quit,” Sonja said, frowning as she pushed his hand away.

“You quit?” Shawn arched an eyebrow, like he couldn’t quite believe it.

Sonja glanced around the hotel room, then fished a key from her purse. “Stay here tonight. Tomorrow, you’ll move into this apartment.”

Shawn nodded, then stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray. “So, should I come see you at the office tomorrow?”

“When you get there, wait for me in the lobby. I’ll take you to meet Bruce.”

“Bruce?” Shawn echoed, his tone teasing.

He lowered his eyes and let a smile play on his lips. “So you’re really going for that Lamont guy?”

“I’ll say this one more time. Stay out of my business,” Sonja replied, her voice frosty. “We’ll do things like we did abroad. I pay you, you help me out. Back then, you handled my homework, my exams, my papers. Now, you’ll help me with work stuff. Got it?”

Shawn looked up, his eyes suddenly sharp and a little dangerous.

For a split second, Sonja’s heart skipped, but she covered it with a cool laugh. “Remember, your sister’s still in my hands.”

Shawn gave a low laugh, all the edge disappearing. Now he just looked like a spoiled rich kid, smooth and careless. He slipped an arm around Sonja’s waist and pulled her close. “Why don’t you stay tonight? It’s been so long.”

He leaned in, but Sonja shoved him away.
