Sonja always had an eye for talent. He glanced at her, catching her gaze just as she turned his way. Their eyes met, and they both grinned, just for a second, like they were sharing some inside joke.

Sonja brushed her hair over her shoulder. “I’ll take Shawn downstairs now.”

“Alright. If you need anything, just ask,” he said.

As they headed down, Shawn arched a brow and broke the silence. “So, who’s Rebecca?”

Sonja paused mid-step, frowning. “Why do you want to know about her?”

Shawn shrugged, “Her name was all over the files you sent me. The R&D plan I just mentioned, that was hers too, right? She’s impressive. Is she working downstairs too?”

Sonja pressed her lips together. “She’s not with the company anymore. You’re taking her spot now, and honestly, I hope you do even better.”

“Got it,” Shawn said, a little awed. “Still, if I ever get the chance, I’d really like to meet her.”

Sonja’s voice turned cold. “Don’t bring her up around me again.”

Shawn put his hands up in surrender. “Sorry. You’ve only been back a couple months and already there are so many things I can’t mention. You used to be so chill about this stuff.”

On the ground floor, Sonja introduced Shawn to the R&D team. “From now on, Shawn’s in charge of R&D. Everyone reports to him.”

Then she headed straight for the VP’s office, leaving the team looking at each other in confusion.

Shawn flashed an easy smile. “Let’s get to know each other over dinner tonight. My treat.”

A free meal got everyone on board pretty quickly.

Shawn settled into the director’s office, pulled out her laptop, and got down to work. She’d spent years in product development overseas, where fintech was miles ahead, so getting up to speed only took her a few hours. Still, when she opened the folder Sonja had sent, she couldn’t help but be impressed.
