If he could just steal this and hand it over to Scott, he’d be set for life. Financial freedom was right there, almost close enough to touch. NovaStack Cloud’s offer was already sitting in his inbox. Five million dollars. Five million. Greg swallowed, his throat suddenly dry.
But how was he supposed to snatch the proposal without anyone noticing? He glanced up at the security camera over Rebecca’s office door. How could he possibly get past that?
Just then, Wayne, the company's IT guy, stopped by to say hi. “Greg, the server room’s getting maintenance the day after tomorrow. The wireless network’s going down for a while, so you’ll need to use wired connections instead.”
Wireless going down? That meant the office cameras would be dead too. This was perfect. It felt like fate was on his side.
“No problem, Wayne. Thanks for letting me know!” Greg grinned and patted him on the shoulder, practically glowing.
Wayne looked a little puzzled. What was Greg so happy about?
The next day was Christmas. That afternoon, Rebecca was buried in work when her phone rang. It was Caleb.
“Hey, Caleb?”
“Rebecca, it’s Christmas. Are you free tonight? I want to take you out, celebrate you finishing your exams.”
She suddenly remembered how he’d kept asking about her Christmas plans at the library before her test. Rebecca let out a quiet sigh. “Didn’t Judy invite you to that concert?”
“I’m not interested. I turned her down,” Caleb said, totally honest.
Rebecca paused, then decided to say yes to dinner. If Caleb was hoping for something more, it was better to get everything out in the open now. She really only saw him as a friend.
Soon, the workday ended. Rebecca packed up her things and headed out. At the elevator, Cindy caught up with her.
“Hey, gorgeous. Want to grab dinner tonight?”
Rebecca gave a polite smile. “Sorry, I’ve already got plans.”
Cindy’s eyes widened. She immediately sensed something was up. “With a guy or a girl?”
“A guy.”
Cindy was shocked. A man had invited Rebecca out? Cindy was sure she knew what that meant, and she doubted Rebecca was clueless, either. But Rebecca was still going. That could only mean one thing—Rebecca must be interested in him too.
